| 1 | | Nvidia reported revenue of $13.5B in its second quarter, more than double what it was a year ago, driven by inflated demand for its AI chips. On Wednesday, the company announced record-breaking revenue for its fiscal Q2 2024 earnings. Profit soared to nearly $6.2B, up 843% YoY. What the numbers say: Nvidia's quarterly profit soared to nearly $6.2B, up 843% YoY. Its $13.5B revenue surpassed its May estimate of $11B, which at the time propelled Nvidia's market cap to over $1T. Nvidia's $15.3B in quarterly revenue surpassed its May estimate of $11B, which at the time propelled Nvidia's market cap to over $1 trillion. Datacenter chip sales, primarily for AI training, now dominate the company's revenue, reaching a record $10.3B, more than doubling in just one quarter. Quotable: Nvidia currently claims roughly 70% of AI chip sales amid growing competition from AMD and others. In a statement, CEO Jensen Huang said major cloud computing providers are investing heavily in Nvidia chips to train AI and bring the technology to every industry. "A new computing era has begun," he said. "Companies worldwide are transitioning from general-purpose to accelerated computing and generative AI." What's next: Nvidia now projects Q3 sales of $16B, which is $3.5B higher than analysts' expectations and almost triple what it was the year before. The company said it's ramping up capacity as demand for AI chips outstrips supply. Industry executives still expect the shortage of H100s, its high-end GPU for AI applications, to extend throughout 2024. Meanwhile, Nvidia plans to launch its next AI chip, the GH200, in mid-2024. | | |
| 2 | | Microsoft is exploring the addition of AI-powered features for various Windows apps, including Photos, Camera, and Paint, reports Windows Central. Microsoft has already announced Windows Copilot, its AI-powered assistant for the OS, set to launch to all users later this year. More: - According to Windows Central, Microsoft is experimenting with AI in these built-in Windows apps:
- Microsoft Paint, the image editor, could get a "Magic Paint" button that would generate images based on text prompts.
- An AI feature in the Photos app could recognize people and objects in photos and cut and paste them elsewhere.
- In addition, Microsoft could bring AI optical character recognition (OCR) to the Camera app and the Snipping Tool. This would identify text from photos/screenshots and let users copy and paste it.
Zoom out: - Certain features might rely on specialized hardware like NPUs or VPUs.
- Microsoft could announce the AI plans during a "special event" on Sept. 21.

| 3 | | Brain implants combined with AI technology have helped two women — one paralyzed and the other with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis — to communicate again. The breakthroughs, highlighted in two studies featured in the journal Nature, show major advancements in brain-computer interfaces. First study: - In one study, a thin silicon sheet with electrodes was implanted on the brain surface of a woman who is paralyzed.
- The woman, unable to speak or move her arms and legs for 18 years due to a stroke, was able to use her brain signals to control a computer.
- An algorithm translated her brain signals into text at a rate of 78 words per minute, five times faster than prior brain-computer interfaces.
- This allowed her to communicate through a speaking avatar.
Second study: - In another study, a woman with Lou Gehrig's disease had sensors implanted in her brain's outer layers.
- After training, a computer system linked to the sensors translated her brain signals into text at a rate of 62 words per minute.

| 4 | | AI startup ElevenLabs has upgraded its voice-generating platform with a new model that generates synthetic voices in almost 30 languages. The text-to-speech platform, which launched in January and has grown in popularity, is now leaving beta. More: - The platform takes in text the user types, identifies the language, and generates "emotionally rich" speech read aloud across 28 languages.
- It's now powered by a new foundational multilingual deep-learning model, Eleven Multilingual v2.
- Along with the new model, users can also speak across multiple languages without having to first type text using the platform's voice cloning tool, which allows users to submit recordings of their voice.
- According to ElevenLabs, a speaker's voice characteristics, like accent, are retained regardless of the language.
Zoom out: - ElevenLabs was founded in 2022 by Piotr Dabkowski, formerly a machine learning engineer at Google, and Mati Staniszewski, an ex-deployment strategist at Palantir.
- The startup recently nabbed $19M in a funding round co-led by Andreessen Horowitz, former Apple AI leader Daniel Gross, and former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman, with participation from the co-founders of Instagram and Oculus VR and other investors.

| 5 | | A new study that will leverage AI to assess how LAPD officers communicate during traffic stops. The goal is to determine if the language used by police can escalate encounters with the public unnecessarily, according to the Los Angeles Times. More: - Under the study, USC and other university researchers will review body camera footage from 1,000 traffic stops over three years.
- They will use that data to train a machine learning system to flag cases when an officer "crosses the line."
- The study will also consider factors like the location, the driver's race, and officer rank.
- Researchers plan to take extensive measures to ensure the anonymity of both officers and subjects.
- The findings will help the LAPD train officers and "promote accountability," according to Cmdr. Marla R. Ciuffetelli of the Office of Constitutional Policing & Policy.
