| Good morning/afternoon, Inside Streaming readers! I watched a pretty good movie last night. It was a Sundance 2022 selection that's recently popped up to stream on Hulu, called "God's Country." Thandiwe Newton stars as a college professor, originally from New Orleans, who has resettled in a very rural spot in Montana. When two local hunters start parking their truck on her property, against her wishes, it kicks off a feud with ultimately far-reaching consequences. I don't want to give anything else away! Just watch it! Lon p/lon-harris | |
| 1 | | Representatives from the Alliance for Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) and the Writers Guild of America (WGA) met again on Tuesday, to what Deadline terms "mixed results." No details about specific proposals have emerged from the discussions. More: - The AMPTP delivered a counter-proposal to the WGA last week, including a number of new concessions on key issues.
- The WGA committee then met on Monday to consider the studios' offer, which included new proposals around streaming residuals, pay raises, AI, and staffing.
- On Tuesday, Deadline reported that the talks have been "progressive," though it's worth noting that Deadline, as with all Hollywood trade papers, tends to represent the studio perspective more than the WGA's.
- Should the strikes extend beyond Labor Day, they will begin to have a serious impact on the 2023-2024 TV season, particularly for broadcast networks.

| 2 | | "Warrior Nun" executive producer Dean English announced on a new dedicated website that the Netflix fantasy-drama series will return as a trilogy of feature films. - The series is based on the comic book "Warrior Nun Areala" by Ben Dunn; Simon Barry created the adaptation and served as showrunner.
- Alba Baptista stars as a 19-year-old who dies and wakes up in the morgue with a divine artifact embedded in her back; she now serves as part of an ancient order that battles demons on Earth.

| 4 | | The trailer for Netflix's Leonard Bernstein biopic "Maestro" was met with some backlash online over star/director Bradley Cooper's use of a prosthetic nose. Composer Bernstein was Jewish, while Cooper is not, leading some to level accusations of "Jewface" against the actor. More: - The film centers on the "West Side Story" composer's tumultuous 25-year marriage to Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan).
- In a post to Twitter/X, Bernstein's daughters Jamie, Alexander, and Nina said that they had worked closely with Cooper on the film, and they are "perfectly fine" with the filmmaker's decision to "amplify [their father's] resemblance."
- Neither Cooper nor Netflix responded to requests for comment.
- The term "Jewface" was popularized by comedian Sarah Silverman on her podcast in 2021, and refers to non-Jewish actors playing characters who aren't just Jews, but who are in part defined by their Jewishness.

| 6 | | Google has apparently started issuing refunds to some marketers following claims that it was selling low quality streaming ads. A recent, widely-shared report from Adalytics suggested that Google was selling advertisers low-quality ad placements but charging premium prices. More: - According to Adalytics, so-called premium ads were often placed within small, hard-to-find video ads, some of which played automatically and didn't meet Google's own monetization standards.
- Adalytics reported that Google's ad placements violated their own standards approximately 80% of the time.
- A representative for Google told AdAge "we sometimes issue credits to advertisers; this is not uncommon."
- Google has also indicated that Adalytics used a "flawed methodology" in their report.

| 7 | | Disney apparently spent around $105.9 million to produce the "Willow" sequel series. The fantasy comedy-drama series, based on the 1988 film, ran for one season on Disney+, and was pulled from the platform to save costs after just six months. More: - Disney acquired the rights to "Willow" along with other Lucasfilm properties from founder George Lucas in 2012, as part of a $4 billion deal that also included the "Star Wars" franchise.
- The eight-part series debuted in October 2022.
- "Willow" was produced in the United Kingdom, and benefited from the UK's Television Tax Relief plan, which allowed producers to recoup up to 25% of the money spent in the country; these filings were also how Forbes was able to determine Disney's budget for the series.
- The bulk of the show's expenses went to post-production work, which was led by Lucasfilm's Industrial Light & Magic team in London.
