| 1 | OpenAI's ChatGPT website experienced a third straight month of declining traffic in August, although there are signs that the decline is coming to an end, according to data from Similarweb. More: - Global website visits to the chatbot site fell by 3.2% to 1.43 billion in August.
- This is a less steep drop than in June and July, when ChatGPT traffic dropped nearly 10%.
- In August, there was a slight increase in the number of unique visitors, and the U.S. saw a small uptick in website visits.
- The return of schools in September, particularly in the U.S., is likely driving the resurgence in ChatGPT's traffic, with college-age users and younger seeking homework assistance.
- The launch of the ChatGPT iOS app in May might have also redirected some website traffic.

| 2 | | The IRS is employing AI to target tax schemes among wealthy individuals and businesses, including auditing 75 major partnerships such as those between hedge funds, real estate investors, and publicly traded companies. AI can enhance pattern recognition and reveal previously hidden trends, according to Daniel Werfel, the IRS commissioner. More: - The IRS is targeting tax evaders with reported incomes above $1M who owe more than $250,000 in back taxes.
- Supported by Inflation Reduction Act funds, the effort targets roughly 1,600 taxpayers.
- The IRS will also audit 75 large partnerships with over $10B in assets on average.
- Machine learning has helped identify the targets, which weren't disclosed.
Zoom out: - In 2021, a group of academic economists and IRS researchers found that the wealthiest 1% of U.S. income earners do not report over 20% of their earnings to the IRS.

| 3 | | AI company Anthropic introduced Claude Pro, the paid version of its Claude 2 chatbot. San Francisco-based Anthropic is one of the best-funded generative AI startups in the Bay Area, behind only OpenAI and Inflection AI. Claude competes with both ChatGPT and Inflection AI's Pi chatbot, among others. Details: Anthropic's subscription-based Claude.ai chat experience is priced at $20 per month in the U.S., the same as the ChatGPT Plus plan. While Anthropic still offers a free version, Claude Pro offers priority access during high-traffic periods, the ability to send more messages, and early access to features. Why it matters: Claude's key advantage over ChatGPT is its extensive 100,000-token context window, which allows it to process approximately 75,000 words in one go, making it more suitable for longer documents and conversations compared to ChatGPT's 8,000-token limit in GPT-4 mode. Q: What other ways do you think companies like Anthropic, OpenAI, and Inflection AI could make their AI chatbots more user-friendly? Join the conversation here. | | |
