| 3 | | In a recently published post, Microsoft's partner software engineer, Stephen Toub, detailed the performance improvements coming to .NET 8. Toub believes the ability to set Dynamic Profile-Guided Optimization (PGO) on by default would be the most valuable pull request in the upcoming version of .NET 8. More: - Static PGO is an approach in which applications are built with additional instrumentation, run the application on key scenarios, gather results, and rebuild the application by imputing the instrumentation data into the optimizer.
- Dynamic PGO automates this optimization process within the application's execution to enhance code performance without any manual effort.
- Dynamic PGO was previewed in .NET 6, improved in .NET 7 but remained off by default, and now, after significant improvements, it is on by default.
- Microsoft also made improvements to vectorization, branching, bounds checking, zeroing, casting, value types, and more.
