| 2 | | What the numbers say: In 2022, only 15 nations were responsible for 94.5% of the total diamond exports by value worldwide. Within this group, the leading trio — India, the U.S., and the United Arab Emirates — contributed to almost half the global diamond export value. Relevance: Ranked as the foremost global diamond exporter in volume, Russia saw its state-owned enterprise Alrosa extract nearly a third of all diamonds manufactured in 2021. To curtail financial support to the Kremlin's activities, the U.S., a key destination for finished diamonds, responded last spring by prohibiting the import of uncut Russian diamonds, coupled with the U.S. Treasury Department imposing sanctions on Alrosa. Various other nations also enforced sanctions, with the U.K. announcing a complete prohibition on Russian diamonds at the beginning of this year. | | |
