| Hey Inside Streaming Readers - We've got a pretty rare occurrence today... NO new shows or films hitting any major US subscription streaming platform! Typically, Mondays are the lightest days of the week for new releases. Plus it's the 22nd anniversary of the September 11th attacks, a somber day of remembrance in the US that's not an ideal platform to launch a hot new streaming show. Still, this almost NEVER happens in 2023, so it seemed worth pointing out. It means we've got an extra news item to make up for the lack of a streaming calendar. But fear not! New programming returns tomorrow. Lon p/lon-harris | |
| 1 | | YouTube's first Sunday Ticket streams seemed to function well over the weekend, despite concerns about potential time lag. The first weekend NFL Sunday Ticket streams had been expected to experience delays of up to one minute, based on some online reports, but the actual lag was apparently under 20 seconds. More: - According to Variety, the majority of social media responses to Sunday Ticket on YouTube TV were positive.
- Data about time delays were compiled by comparing the CBS live broadcast of the Cincinnati Bengals vs. Cleveland Browns game with YouTube's livestream.
- YouTube did not specifically address latency issues, but in a statement to NBC News, the company assured fans that YouTube TV is built on the same infrastructure as the main YouTube service, which "reliably serves billions of playback every day."

| 3 | | SAG-AFTRA chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland spoke with Deadline about some positive signs to emerge from the studios and streamers' latest meeting with the Writers Guild. During a discussion at the Toronto Film Festival, Crabtree-Ireland told Deadline's Anthony D'Alessandro that he's encouraged by the AMPTP's apparent willingness to get more transparent about viewership numbers. More: - Actors and writers are demanding residual payments based on viewership of their work across streaming platforms.
- So far, AMPTP has rejected these proposals; in the most recent round of negotiations, studios and streamers offered to provide the WGA itself with limited viewership information over the next three years, but no additional payments tied to this data.
- Crabtree-Ireland told Deadline that SAG-AFTRA's proposal is based on viewership data from Parrot Analytics, but that the guild is open to alternative plans and feedback regarding metrics.
- On Friday, the WGA alterted members that several representatives of legacy media companies have privately expressed a desire to make a new deal, with one studio executive apparently telling the guild that "they needed a deal badly."
- WGA has now been on strike for 130 days; the SAG-AFTRA strike hit Day 57 on Monday.

| 4 | | Netflix's high-profile live-action adaptation of the "One Piece" manga and anime franchise has already been knocked out of the #1 spot on its US Top 10 list. The #1 most-streamed show in the US is now Shane Gillis' stand-up special "Beautiful Dogs," with a total runtime of just 52 minutes. More: - Because of the relatively brief runtime of the Gillis special, it seems likely that "One Piece" will return to the #1 spot at some point, should viewers finish the complete first season.
- Forbes offers the alternate theory that "One Piece" was immediately popular with fans, who have already finished binging the entire first season.
- "One Piece" was reportedly viewed for around 140 million hours between August 13 and September 3, relatively solid but not record-breaking numbers.

| 5 | | In a new interview with The Times of London, "Top Boy" star Ashley Walters discusses collaborating on the series with 67-year-old Irish novelist Ronan Bennett. Though Walters praises Bennett's writing and his choice to work with consultants on the scripts, he adds "it would have been ideal for Black people's stories to have been told by a Black person." More: - Walters adds that, had "Top Boy" debuted in 2023, it likely would have focused more on behind-the-scenes collaborators with "lived experience" in the world depicted on the series.
- "Top Boy" is set among drug dealers living and working in East London, and has been compared to HBO's classic crime drama "The Wire."
- The show debuted in 2011 on the UK's Channel 4, but moved over to Netflix after two seasons, in part due to the efforts of North American fan (and now executive producer) Drake.
