| 1 | | Author Walter Isaacson's book "Elon Musk" hit shelves today with details about Musk's AI fears and ambitions. A Time article adapted from the biography highlights Musk's AI endeavors and growing concerns about AI's impact on humanity. Here are some takeaways. OpenAI formation: - According to Isaacson, Musk invested $5M in AI lab DeepMind after meeting co-founder Demis Hassabis in 2012.
- Later, Musk held discussions about AI safety with Google co-founder Larry Page, who was dismissive of Musk's AI concerns, leading to an end to their friendship.
- In 2014, Google acquired DeepMind, and Musk co-founded OpenAI with Sam Altman in 2015 as a nonprofit organization to counter Google's AI dominance.
- Musk was upset when Altman converted OpenAI into a for-profit.
Data for AI: - Musk's break with OpenAI in 2018 led him to pursue AI-related projects, including Neuralink, Optimus, and the Dojo supercomputer for AI training.
- Musk acquired Twitter and restricted access to its data to prevent Google and Microsoft from using it to improve their AI chatbots.
- The CEO believes that his unique vision for AI, combined with Tesla and Twitter data, will be valuable assets for his AI endeavors, including his new AI company, xAI.
Goals for xAI: - Musk told the xAI team his goals were to create an AI bot that writes computer code and another to compete against OpenAI's GPT series.
- A third eventual goal was to create an artificial general intelligence that can think, reason, and pursue truth in its ultimate goal of preserving humanity.
- Isaacson concludes Musk "was embarking on a mission similar to the one chronicled in the formative (perhaps too formative?) bible of his childhood years, the one that pulled him out of his adolescent existential depression, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which featured a supercomputer designed to figure out 'the Answer to The Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything.'"

| 2 | | Nvidia, Adobe, and six more tech companies have agreed to follow the White House's voluntary commitments for safe, secure, and transparent AI. The remaining companies are IBM, Cohere, Palantir, Salesforce, Scale AI, and Stability AI. More: - The pledges are similar to the voluntary commitments made earlier this year by Microsoft, Google, OpenAI, and other firms to follow AI standards.
- This second wave of commitments also agrees to watermark or label AI-generated content, internally and externally test AI systems before public release, and invest in cybersecurity safeguards to protect model weights.
- They pledge to allow third-party reporting of vulnerabilities, research societal risks, and share information to mitigate risks with government, academia, and civil society.
- One pledge agrees to develop AI systems "to help address society's greatest challenges."
- "The president has been clear: harness the benefits of AI, manage the risks, and move fast – very fast," White House chief of staff Jeff Zients said in a statement.

| 3 | | Silicon Valley startup Enfabrica, which builds networking chips for AI workloads, secured $125M in an oversubscribed Series B equity funding round. Enfabrica's network chip aims to transform data center connectivity, creating a hub-and-spoke network that allows Nvidia GPUs to access data from multiple sources without slowdowns. More: - Enfabrica was founded by former Broadcom director CEO Rochan Sankar and former Google networking platforms head Shrijeet Mukherjee in 2020.
- The startup, which emerged from stealth this year, will use the funding to expand its teams and R&D and begin production of its Accelerated Compute Fabric Switch (ACF-S) devices and solutions.
- The ACF-S hardware offers lightning-fast multi-terabit data transfer among GPUs, CPUs, AI accelerators, memory, and networking devices.
- Enfrabrica claims it reduces GPU compute for large language models like Llama 2 by approximately 50% while maintaining performance.
Funding: - Atreides Management led the funding round, with additional funding from Sutter Hill Ventures and new funding from Nvidia, IAG Capital Partners, Liberty Global Ventures, Valor Equity Partners, Infinitum Partners, and Alumni Ventures.
- Atreides founder Gavin Baker will assume a seat on Enfabrica's board.

| 4 | | Coca-Cola launched a new limited edition flavor, Coca-Cola Y3000, with the help of AI technology. The company employed an AI system to determine flavor pairings and profiles and generate images for the product's packaging. The move comes as the market for generative AI in product development is expected to surpass $1.1B by 2032. What happened: To create the new flavor, Coca-Cola gathered insights from consumers about what they envision a "futuristic drink" to taste like. The company then turned to AI assistance to refine the flavor notes and craft the product's aluminum can, which shows the label "Co-Created with AI." Why It Matters: Coca-Cola has previously leveraged generative AI for art as well as advertising, including the AI-generated ad campaign "Masterpiece," developed in collaboration with OpenAI. It's the first time it's used an AI system to help design a new Coke flavor. What Brands Should Care: Chile's Not Company (NotCo) is using its proprietary platform, Giuseppe, powered by AI, to design plant-based versions of popular products. NotCo has partnered with companies like Kraft Heinz, Burger King, Starbucks, Dunkin', and Shake Shack. In October, Kraft Heinz released NotCheese, its plant-based product based on its iconic Kraft American cheese, which was designed with help from NotCo's AI technology. | | |
