| 2 | | Meta Platforms is reportedly developing a powerful AI model to compete with OpenAI's GPT-4, according to The Wall Street Journal. Meta is aggressively acquiring advanced AI training chips and building out its data centers to develop the chatbot for potential release next year. More: - Training for Meta's large language model is set to begin in early 2024.
- The new system, expected to be "several times more powerful" than Meta's current Llama 2 model, would allow companies to build AI services for text generation, image creation, and analysis.
- To achieve this, Meta is buying more Nvidia H100 AI-training chips and strengthening its infrastructure to reduce reliance on Microsoft's Azure cloud platform.
- Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, intends to make the new model open-source.
Zoom out: - Despite these ambitions, Meta has encountered challenges, including high AI researcher turnover due to an "internal battle" over computing resources between AI teams.

| 3 | | Amazon unveiled new rules requiring self-published authors to tell the company when their content is AI-generated. Amazon won't publicly identify AI-generated books, but it remains open to revisiting this practice. More: - The rules distinguish between AI-generated content and AI-assisted content, where disclosure is not required if the author created the original content but used AI to edit and/or refine it.
- "AI-generated" applies to content created with AI, whether text, images, or translations, even if the author makes "substantial edits."
- The guidelines apply to authors who distribute their work through Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing platform.
- The Authors Guild referred to the policy as "a welcome first step" after months of talks between the guild and Kindle Direct Publishing.
Zoom out: - Last month, Amazon removed five books from its platform that were wrongly credited to author Jane Friedman, who suspects they were AI-generated.

| 4 | | Just over half of Americans, or 53%, think AI-spread misinformation will impact who wins the 2024 presidential election, according to an Axios-Morning Consult poll. The poll, conducted online from Aug. 10 to 13 among 2,203 U.S. adults, has a margin of error of ±2 percentage points. What the numbers show: 53% believe AI-driven misinformation will affect the election outcome, a view shared by Fox, CNN, and MSNBC viewers. Trump supporters (47%) were nearly twice as concerned about AI eroding their trust in election results as Biden supporters (27%). Overall, 35% believed AI would lower their trust in election advertising, with 42% among Trump voters and 33% among Biden voters. Why it matters: The survey highlights widespread doubt about election integrity as a result of AI. The technology has already been used by the Republican National Committee in its first AI-generated video ad, which attacked President Biden. A pro-Ron DeSantis super PAC released a TV ad attacking former President Trump, using an AI-generated version of Trump's voice. Meanwhile, the Federal Election Commission (FEC) has moved closer to potentially regulating AI content in political ads. Q: Do you think AI-generated misinformation will affect who wins the 2024 presidential election? Join the conversation here. | | |
