Urban fishing and vineyard dining

8 September 2023

From herb walks around Los Angeles to party-infused dining in Menorca, this week's edition focuses on building a life around food and nature. Plus other fun ways to make a living, including baking cigarette cakes and running a shop for London's cowboys.

01. A restaurant consisting of one large table in the middle of a small vineyard, with views over the sea near Portofino – yes please. What's more, Osteria dei Coppelli is not just a restaurant but part of La Portofinese – an eco-farm, garden and brewery with a bar at the foot of a lighthouse. Founder Mino Viacava started to recover abandoned lands in the area and reintroduce small-scale agriculture.

02. Another farm that's doing a lot more than just growing produce: Heenat Salma is an eco-farm and guesthouse just outside Doha 🇶🇦. It was converted from a conventional farm to permaculture, growing desert-friendly fruit and vegetables, and offers craft workshops, a creative residency and agricultural education. The lap pool also looks like it would be a really nice place to take a break from a palm weaving workshop.

03. Andrea Jimenez first started researching herbs for personal health needs, but soon realized its larger connection to environmentalism and community. She now leads 'herb walks' around Los Angeles through Herb Club LA, teaching people about the medicinal benefits and cultural significance of local plants.

04. In Berlin, Mischa Amadeus Olma, a founder of Woodcuisine, arranges foraging workshops and dinners outdoors 🍄 – like in a herb garden in the leafy Mariendorf neighborhood – where he and friends offer a changing menu.

BRAND PARTNERSHIP

There's a big opportunity for every business on TikTok

One in three TikTok users bought a product because they saw it on TikTok. And with TikTok for business, your product could be next. There are digital marketing resources for businesses of all sizes, with all the features you need to launch effective ads, drive sales and measure performance.

Take the guesswork out of going viral.

05. Street fishing – or urban fishing – is also catching on with young people who live in cities but want the zen of angling. And so they have to make do with cast into canals and ponds. It has spawned (sorry) YouTube channels – Birmingham-based Snagged Bros is so popular it sells merch – and online tackle shops.

06. It's similar to something Tatsuo Hino, London/Tokyo-based cultural director at BEAMS & CO and longtime Courier contributor, spotted recently: 'I've been noticing an array of sport apparel brands backed by solid fan bases but with cultural cache – from golf to surfing to fishing. Check out Daiwa Piers 39, New Amsterdam Surf Association, goma.projects, The ADHD cooking School with Loyle Carner and social surf project in Brazil. All these projects offer a platform to get people out there and engaged, great leveling up opportunities.'

07. Tatsuo also told us about Hey Cowboy London: 'Dedicated to cowboys, it's London's only western-wear store, stocking both vintage and new. Why not?' 🤠

08. Elevating food to the status of art is still a relatively new and fast-growing industry, with creative food styling appearing everywhere across social media and at fashion events. But is a new food aesthetic starting to emerge? One that's less curated in favor of something more grungy and tongue in cheek? Take George McCallum – he's a baker who's becoming increasingly popular for his meat bouquets and cigarette cakes, and has hosted supper clubs combining school lunch staples with gourmet ingredients.

09. And it's not just about what you serve, but what you serve it on. Food artists Verónica González and Elena Petrossian – the duo behind Ananas Ananas – just released a conceptual, though still functional, dining set. Made of stainless steel, the collection includes a cluster of skewers and pre-portioned plates (basically really, really nice meal trays).

10. Copenhagen-based Johanne Næsby Fick started cultivating her personal kimchi recipe as a way to reconnect with her South Korean roots (and with a long term dream of opening up a Korean eatery). Now she sells monthly drops of kimchi out of her kitchen and has started pop-ups with other local food businesses. Seoulmade is the name of her brand. 🇰🇷

11. Elsewhere in Copenhagen, Sauna 85 is connecting sauna culture with up-and-comers in the city's creative scene. It's a mobile sauna, built in a tiny home structure, that can host up to 20 people. So far Sauna 85 has put on events with Hooch Wine, urban swimming brand Pond, and New York-style street food BEC, plus hosted aufgus workshops and released a nice towel (even if you're just taking a dip in the pool).

We moved into our new office in Hackney, east London, just over a year ago. In that time, many of you have come down for launches, events and talks, and it's really cemented our belief in the power of an incredible workspace and what an incubator it can be for your brands and businesses. So, we're opening our doors: for the first time, our beautiful new office space is available for hire – whether to host an event or to work from day to day.

Email julia@couriermedia.com for rates and more info.

12. 'Party-infused dining' is the signature of Nonna Bazaar, a converted farm house in the north of Menorca. Food is farm-to-table and each night the restaurant features live music that turns into DJ sets and dancing. 🪩 It's in a fairly remote part of the island, so it's a way to turn a restaurant meal into a proper night out.

13. We love a full circle moment. Back in 2021, we featured Shannon Maldonado and her Philadelphia home-goods store, Yowie, in our first book. She told us that her dream was to one day open a hotel that doubled as a gift shop. And now that dream has become a reality. Recently, Yowie moved into a much bigger space, with a store and cafe on the ground floor and 13 rooms above. Most of the furniture and products throughout the hotel are also available to buy, either in store or through in-room catalogs directing people to the makers.

14. One of many things we love that's stocked at Yowie: this green ripple glass by French-American designer Sophie Lou Jacobsen, who makes lots of fun wavy home accessories out of colorful glass and metal.

15. But back to hotels where we'd like to spend the weekend: check out Casa Tiny, the one-room guesthouse in Oaxaca, set deep in the hills. It was the first project by the Mexican architect Aranza de Ariño when she was just 27.
