| 1 | | The U.S. will provide $1B in additional aid to Ukraine, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said while visiting the wartorn nation. The package features $175M in military aid and includes depleted uranium munitions for the first time. More: - The Pentagon has previously recommended that American-made Abrams tanks in Ukraine be armed with depleted uranium munitions, as they normally are when used by the U.S. Army.
- The specialty rounds would be highly effective at piercing the front armor of Russian tanks from a distance.
- Depleted uranium is radioactive, but is generally seen to only pose risks to people who are in close contact with it.
- The International Atomic Energy Agency recommends caution when handling the armaments and warns that excessive exposure can damage the kidney or cause renal failure in rare cases.
- RAND analyst Scott Boston said the extremely dense material catches fire when shot as part of a round, causing it to become "essentially an exotic metal dart fired at an extraordinarily high speed."

| 2 | | Apple stock lost 3.0% during trading hours on Thursday and around 4% on Wednesday, following reports that Beijing has banned government officials from using iPhones. What happened: According to the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg, several Chinese state agencies have barred employees from using iPhones for work or bringing them to the office. China is Apple's biggest foreign market, with a 19% share in global sales. It is also a hub for iPhone production. Relevance: China may be responding to U.S. bans on Huawei Technologies and TikTok, two major Chinese technology companies, over national security concerns. Beijing's restrictions follow the recent launch of Huawei's high-speed smartphone, which will compete against the iPhone in the high-end segment. | | |
| A message from our sponsor, NativePath. | | | Ever heard of ANTI-NUTRIENT dietary sources? While grains have been the FOUNDATION of the US government’s food pyramid since 1992, they’re actually terrible for you. In fact, they’re the main dietary source of what’s called anti-nutrients. You’ve probably already figured this out, but while nutrients are substances that nourish plants and animals to grow and live, anti-nutrients earn their title because they block the absorption of nutrients – especially those required for strong, healthy bones. | 3 | | Federal prosecutors will seek to indict Hunter Biden on gun charges later this month. The news reports, which are based on court documents filed Wednesday, come after a plea deal negotiated by Biden's attorneys and prosecutors fell apart. More: - The filing says that prosecutors shall "obtain the return of an indictment by a grand jury" by September 29, in accordance with the Speedy Trial Act.
- In a bid to avoid prosecution for a gun charge, Biden in June agreed to plead guilty to two misdemeanor charges related to tax and business deals, but the deal later collapsed.
- Biden allegedly failed to pay income taxes for either 2017 or 2018 despite owing more than $100,000 in taxes each year.
- Biden's lawyers responded to the government filing on Wednesday, arguing that the gun charge should be dismissed because Biden has complied with restrictions that were included in the plea agreement.
- David Weiss, the special counsel in the Hunter Biden investigation, told a judge in August that the firearms diversion agreement was not valid because the plea deal was never finalized.
Zoom Out: - The gun charge comes from Hunter Biden's allegedly false answer on a federal form he filed out in 2018 to acquire a handgun.
- The form asked whether the applicant was an "unlawful user" of drugs.
- Biden, whose struggles with drug addiction are well-documented, answered "No."

| 4 | | GOOD NEWS: California's legislature became the first in the U.S. to pass a law banning caste-based discrimination this week. If signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom, the bill will create new protections for people of South Asian descent who may face discrimination based on skin color or caste origin. More: - The legislation seeks to expand existing legal protections against discrimination based on race, sex, and religion.
- The bill redefines ancestry to include "lineal descent, heritage, parentage, caste, or any inherited social status."
- American-Indian members of the Dalit caste, which has historically been at the bottom of the caste system in India, claim that caste-based discrimination persists in the South Asian diaspora.
Zoom Out: - Caste discrimination is primarily associated with Hindu culture in India.
- India banned caste discrimination in 1948, but substantial inequalities still exist between castes like the Brahmins, who have historically governed India, and lower castes.
- The Indian government has affirmative action-like policies to ensure caste equality in employment and education.

| 5 | | Mexico's supreme court decriminalized abortion across the country on Wednesday. The ruling struck down federal laws criminalizing abortion as "unconstitutional" and expanded access to abortion across all federal healthcare institutions. More: - The ruling did not overturn state-level bans on abortion, but women in the states where it is still banned will legally be able to seek an abortion at federal hospitals and clinics.
- Abortion is still illegal in 20 of Mexico's 30 states.
- The ruling also bars healthcare practitioners in federal hospitals, as well as midwives, from being prosecuted for performing an abortion procedure.
- The court said that the criminalization of abortion "constitutes an act of gender-based violence and discrimination."
Zoom Out: - Colombia, Argentina, Uruguay, and Guyana have also legalized or decriminalized abortion in recent years.

| 6 | | Mayor Eric Adams said that the migrant crisis "will destroy" New York City if federal and state authorities fail to provide more aid for the city. The Mayor's Office said that more than 110,000 asylum-seekers have arrived in New York since Spring 2022, all of whom are legally entitled to housing under the city's right-to-shelter directive. More: - New York City has nearly 60,000 migrants under its care, and more than 10,000 asylum-seekers are arriving every month, Adams said.
- The federal government has already provided ~$140M in shelter funding for New York City, more than any city not on the U.S.-Mexico border.
- New York State has also allocated $1.5B in funding for next year.
- Late last month the White House rejected New York State Governor Kathy Hochul's request for more federal aid, saying that Congress would need to allocate the additional $3B in federal shelter funding that the city is seeking.
Zoom Out: - Adam's office is seeking to amend the right-to-shelter decree to allow the city to suspend the right in some situations.
- In May, when City Hall first requested the changes, Adams said that changing the system is the "responsible" thing to do when the shelter system is buckling and at risk of collapsing.
