| 3 | | Recently, we sat down with Melissa Kiesche, Senior Vice President at Edison Research. Over the course of our conversation, we discussed the importance of data and research to understanding the podcasting industry, how Edison Research collects its data, what its Infinite Dial study means to the podcasting community, and what the future of podcasting could look like. Here's a sneak peek at some of the highlights: When asked about her role at Edison Research, Melissa highlighted that she has "a lot of focus on operations of the company in general. But I have spent a lot of my time focusing on our podcast research, and I head up Edison Podcast Metrics, which is one of our subscription-based products that we have." Edison Research went from radio and political research and expanded to research on smart speakers, audiobooks, and podcasting as the definition of audio changed. As for where audio and podcasting could be going in the future, Melissa said that she thinks there will still be niche content to come out to try and reach different types of people, such as podcasts specifically for older listeners. But she also believes there will be more companion podcasts for shows and movies. "It's the behind-the-scenes content we used to get on the DVD that is now kind of, you know, baked into these companion-style shows." When discussing Edison Research's Infinite Dial study (the longest-running digital media consumer survey), she noted that "each year, we're continuing to see growth. We're continuing to see diversity of listenership. And I think we'll continue to see that. Look for it in early 2024. We'll put out our latest numbers. The nice thing about the Infinite Dial, too, is that because we have this really comprehensive study, all of the custom research that we do, we're able to calibrate our research against the Infinite Dial, that we're weighing our data for our really buttoned-up research."
