| 2 | | The U.K. government unveiled plans to boost funding for two AI supercomputers to £300M ($363.6M), up from £100M ($123.8M). One of the machines, Isambard-AI, will deliver around 200 FP64 PetaFLOPS performance, eventually ranking as the world's fifth highest-performing supercomputer. Details: Isambard-AI, set to be built in the city of Bristol by Hewlett Packard Enterprise, will cost £225M ($273.4M) and use over 5,000 of Nvidia's GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip units. Once completed, it will be the most advanced computer in Britain, running "10 times faster than the U.K.'s current quickest machine." The plan is to eventually link Isambard-AI with the other supercomputer, Dawn, a project by Dell and U.K. firm StackPC. Phase 1 of Dawn, currently the U.K.'s fastest AI supercomputer, is now up and running in Cambridge, with phase two launching next year. The bigger picture: The supercomputers, known as the "AI Research Resource," will support research to make advanced AI models safer, a hot topic at this week's global AI Safety Summit. The U.K. government is also banking on its two supercomputers, which should both be running by summer 2024, to make leaps in drug discovery, fusion energy, healthcare, and climate modeling. U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak noted that with AI models getting more powerful, the investment makes sure that British scientists have the right tools to create safe, advanced AI models. | | |
