| Thanks for opening today's Inside Streaming! Hope everyone in the US had a great holiday weekend, and all of our international readers had a terrific regular, normal weekend. Disney's terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad year at the box office continued this holiday, with the animated musical "Wish" coming in way below expectations. 2023 has been the first year in a decade that the studio has had 0 theatrical releases exceed the $1 billion mark. The Disney+ service is taking a lot of the blame for this scenario, with the suggestion that the studio "trained" audiences to skip theaters and just wait for streaming to watch their latest films, and I suppose there's some truth to that. But on the flip side, we've still seen a lot of enduring passion and excitement around SOME theatrical films, even if they're bound to appear on streaming themselves before too long. ("Five Nights at Freddy's" was very recently a hit in both theaters and on Peacock!) So I'm not sure this satisfies as the LONE explanation for Disney's sudden failure to launch at the domestic box office... There just generally seems to be muted enthusiasm for a lot of the studio's 2023 slate. Lon p/lon-harris | |

| 4 | | Now that Disney+ has partnered with the BBC on "Doctor Who," the show has made some behind-the-scenes changes in how it compensates writers. The series has shifted away from a residual model for writer payments, according to Deadline, and now pays a larger up-front fee for episode scripts. More: - The classic British sci-fi series is currently celebrating its 60th anniversary; former showrunner Russell T. Davies and star David Tennant have returned this year for a trio of specials.
- Because "Doctor Who" episodes are frequently repeated on TV and streamed, the residual payments have become an important income source for many UK writers.
- As "Doctor Who" is a British production, it doesn't need to adhere to WGA guidelines; these new writer deals were nonetheless struck prior to the WGA strike.

| 6 | | In a discussion with Rolling Stone, "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" co-creator Bryan Lee O'Malley suggested the animated series is unlikely to return for a second season. O'Malley, who wrote the original graphic novels on which the series is based, told Rolling Stone that the show is "self-contained for now," adding "we put it all in there." More: - O'Malley says that "Takes Off" -- an alternate reality version of the story in which the characters make different choices from the source material -- was always designed as a limited series.
- The author explained that, as streaming shows typically "get canceled after one season," the creators opted not to risk leaving their story unfinished.
- O'Malley's co-creator, BenDavid Grabinski, also confirmed that no second season was developed or planned.
