| 2 | | What the numbers say: The U.S. and Russia have the largest nuclear arsenals in the world by a large margin. The countries each had deployed approximately 1,700 warheads as of 2023. The number of warheads possessed by countries with smaller nuclear arsenals has generally grown over the past two decades. Relevance: There has been an uptick in the growth of most nuclear arsenals since 2020. The U.S., Russia, and France are notable exceptions to this trend. China's nuclear arsenal was smaller than that of the U.K. and France in 2003. However, it has since grown to become the largest arsenal in the world after the U.S. and Russia. North Korea built its first nuclear warhead in 2015, according to data from the Federation of American Scientists. The country currently possesses 30 warheads, despite international efforts to curb its nuclear program. What's next: North Korea withdrew from the international Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) in 2003 and its nuclear buildup continues to be a threat to South Korea, Japan, and Western countries. | | |
