| 4 | | GOOD NEWS: New research found that the Chinese practice of tai chi can protect against dementia and cognitive decline in older adults. Lead study author Dr. Elizabeth Eckstrom said that practicing tai chi effectively staves off cognitive decline by three years. More: - The study included ~300 older adults who had reported that their memories were deteriorating.
- The subjects, who were in their mid-70s on average, took the Montreal Cognitive Assessment to determine how much their memory had declined.
- The participants had an average score of 25, which is on the high end of the score range for people with mild cognitive impairment but who don't have dementia.
- Participants who practiced a simplified version of tai chi called Tai Ji Quan twice a week for roughly six months had scores that were, on average, 1.5 points higher.
- People suffering from mild cognitive decline can expect to have their test scores drop by 0.5 points per year.
- Participants who practiced a more challenging type of tai chi called Cognitive Enhanced Tai Ji Quan, in which practitioners do spelling and word problems while doing physical tai chi moves, saw their scores increase by six points.
- Mary Beth Van Cleave, an 86-year-old tai chi practitioner, said that tai chi is a meditative practice that can help with concentration.
