| 1 | | YouTube will begin requiring creators to label videos containing "realistic" AI-generated content. YouTube said the AI disclosure is "especially important" for content involving elections, health crises, public officials, and other sensitive topics. More: - A new blog post outlined the company's new approach to moderating AI-created content.
- As part of its new labeling rule, YouTube will require creators to check a box for "realistic" AI content, such as lifelike scenes or real individuals saying fictional statements, during video uploads.
- The labels will be visible in the video descriptions, as well as on top of videos for sensitive topics.
- YouTube said users who violate the new rule will be "held accountable," with potential punishments including removing videos or demonetizing creators' channels.
Takedown requests: - YouTube will also allow users to request the removal of content simulating identifiable individuals, including their voices or faces, via its privacy request process.
- Not all requests will be granted, especially for satire, parody, or content imitating public figures, which have a higher bar for removal.
- The company is also setting up a separate process for music industry partners to request the removal of content imitating an artist's unique voice.

| 2 | | Google DeepMind announced GraphCast, an advanced AI weather prediction model that delivers 10-day forecasts in under a minute. In September, GraphCast predicted Hurricane Lee's Nova Scotia landfall nine days ahead, surpassing traditional forecasts by three days, according to Rémi Lam, a Google DeepMind research scientist. More: - In a Science journal study published today, Google's researchers described GraphCast as a "turning point in weather forecasting."
- The AI model, trained on almost 40 years of historical data, can generate 10-day forecasts at six-hour intervals for global locations.
- GraphCast uses a small desktop computer, while a traditional model on a school bus-sized supercomputer takes an hour or more for the same task, they said.
- GraphCast outperformed the gold-standard "European model" by around 10% on over 90% of assessed weather variables. The former showed superior accuracy for both daily weather and extreme events, including hurricanes and extreme temperatures, according to the study.

| 3 | | New research reveals that AI-generated faces are now remarkably similar to real human faces. However, because AI algorithms are predominantly trained on white faces, they excel in creating highly realistic white faces, a phenomenon the researchers called "AI hyperrealism." More: - In one experiment, the researchers found that white AI-generated faces are judged as real more often than actual human faces.
- Participants were randomly shown 100 real human faces and 100 AI-generated faces.
- 66% of AI-generated images were mistaken for humans, compared to only 51% of human faces being correctly identified.
- Interestingly, adults who showed the highest number of mistakes were also the most confident, which is "a Dunning-Kruger effect," the researchers said.
Zoom out: - The international research team said the findings have real-world implications in areas like identity theft and misinformation, as people can be more easily tricked by deepfakes.

| 4 | | Google Cloud's latest cybersecurity report reveals the growing use of generative AI in cyber attacks, including phishing, SMS, and other social engineering tactics. Details: Google's report stresses the role of generative AI in both offensive and defensive cybersecurity strategies, with attackers using it for phishing and social engineering while defenders using it in threat intelligence and data analysis. According to Google, generative AI's ability to mimic natural language complicates the detection of traditional phishing signs, like misspellings and grammatical errors. Attackers can also alter legitimate content using LLMs while maintaining the original writing style. Meanwhile, AI-powered fake news and deepfakes pose greater threats, potentially eroding public trust in online information. What the numbers show: A prior study showed most business leaders are concerned about AI-enabled cyber attacks targeting their companies. Nearly 70% expressed the most concern about AI's potential role in impersonation and spear-phishing attacks. | | |
