| 1 | | A ResumeBuilder survey of business leaders revealed that 44% of companies expect AI to result in layoffs in 2024. 37% of the AI-using companies surveyed said the technology already replaced workers this year. What happened: In November, ResumeBuilder.com and Pollfish surveyed 750 C-level executives and company leaders about the changing landscape at work due to AI. What the numbers show: 53% of the companies said they currently use AI, with another 24% planning to adopt it in 2024. This year, 37% of AI-using companies experienced worker displacement due to the technology, and 44% foresee AI causing layoffs in 2024. On a more positive note, 96% of companies hiring in 2024 said job candidates can benefit from having AI skills, and 83% say AI skills can help existing employees keep their jobs. What it means: Julia Toothacre, ResumeBuilder's resume and career strategist, advised employees to identify which of their work tasks can't be replaced by AI, and then position themselves as the go-to-person for those tasks. "Employees need to find ways to grow their skills and stay relevant in their field if they don't want their job to be given to AI," Toothacre said. | | |
| 2 | | Former Pakistani PM Imran Khan's political party employed AI to create an audio clip of the imprisoned politician for a campaign rally. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party used AI-audio cloning technology to replicate Khan's voice for a speech, which aired during the virtual rally on Sunday. More: - In the video, Khan said his party isn't allowed to host in-person rallies.
- To create his cloned voice, Khan provided PTI with a shorthand script that was refined to match his speaking style.
- The text was transformed into audio using ElevenLabs's AI software.
- The five-hour virtual rally, with over 500,000 YouTube views, led the Pakistani government to block access to Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube on Sunday.
Zoom out: - Khan, the face of PTI, was ousted as Pakistan's prime minister in April 2022.
- While campaigning for re-election, he received a three-year jail sentence in August on corruption charges. He has remained in jail on allegations of leaking classified documents, and he claims the charges are false and politically motivated.

| 3 | | Airbnb said it will use AI to find and block rental bookings that are a higher risk for parties on New Year's Eve. The move is Airbnb's latest effort to curb disruptive parties in neighborhoods. Last year, the company formalized a global ban on all parties and events at Airbnb listings. More: - Airbnb today announced new "proprietary" AI and machine learning technology to crack down on unauthorized parties.
- The technology will specifically identify and block one- to three-night reservations for homes that are flagged as "potentially higher risk for a party incident."
- According to Airbnb, its AI analyzes "hundreds of signals" to spot high-risk bookings, such as trip duration, listing type, and last-minute reservations.
- The measures will apply in the U.S., U.K., Canada, France, Spain, Australia, and New Zealand.

| 4 | | OpenAI announced its "preparedness framework" guidelines for how it will review and handle the safety risks posed by its powerful AI systems. The 27-page document details OpenAI's approach to tracking, evaluating, and protecting models used in areas like cyberattacks, influence campaigns, and autonomous weapons. More: - Using a matrix approach, OpenAI will gauge the risk levels posed by its frontier models across categories, assigning scores (low, medium, high, or critical) to each risk before and after mitigation strategies.
- Only models scoring "medium" or lower can be deployed. OpenAI will stop developing any model if it can't lower the risk below critical.
- The company is also forming a new internal advisory group to evaluate safety reports and send them to executives and board members.
- The framework will be refined over time based on feedback and research, OpenAI said.
Zoom out: - OpenAI's already existing "preparedness" team is tasked with overseeing advanced AI models and monitoring for "catastrophic risks" such as cybersecurity and nuclear threats.
- Aleksander Madry, director of MIT's Center for Deployable Machine Learning, leads the team after joining OpenAI in May.
- Under Madry, the team will provide monthly reports to the new internal safety advisory group, which will analyze and make recommendations to the CEO and board.
- The board can override executive decisions, including delaying the release of an AI model, even if the company's leadership considers it safe.
