| Thanks for opening today's Inside Streaming daily brief! We're getting a LOT of insight into Netflix's viewership thanks to their new report, which provides actual data for nearly all shows and films on the platform throughout the first six months of 2023. It's by far our most transparent, detailed look behind the curtain at how Netflix users actually behave, and there are many valuable insights to be gleaned, some of which we discuss in today's newsletter! Still, Netflix is reporting all these numbers in terms of "views," their metric that takes the total number of minutes viewed and divides this by a show's running time. It's not NOTHING. But still, that's not how we usually measure viewership. In the most straight-forward way, what everyone actually wants to know is... how many people watched a particular Netflix show vs. another show. And we still don't know that. Instead, we know how long shows were left playing, and how many complete playthroughs of the full content that works out to. It'd be like reporting box office by saying how many shows on how many screens a movie played on in a weekend, and how many seats they have in those theaters, without reporting how many actual people had bought tickets and sat down to watch. It's better than no data, but it's not really what you most wanted to know. For now, it's as good as we're going to get. Lon p/lon-harris | |
