| 1 | | George Carlin's estate has sued the makers of an AI-generated special featuring an audio recreation of the late comedian. The hour-long special, called "George Carlin: I'm Glad I'm Dead," did not receive permission from his family to use the likeness of the comedian, who died in 2008. More: - The special was produced by Dudesy, a podcast channel run by "Mad TV" alum Will Sasso and podcaster Chad Kultgen.
- The late comedian's estate, including daughter Kelly Carlin, filed the lawsuit on Thursday, naming Dudesy, Sasso, and Kultgen as defendants.
- The suit, alleging violations of Carlin's right of publicity and copyright, is seeking unspecified damages and a court order calling for the removal of the special from the internet.
- In a statement, Carlin's daughter described the podcast as "a poorly executed facsimile cobbled together by unscrupulous individuals to capitalize on the extraordinary goodwill my father established with his adoring fanbase."
Zoom out: - Some reports noted that the AI "Carlin," trained on thousands of hours of the comedian's material, does not especially sound like him. In a recent podcast, Sasso remarked that the AI version couldn't replace Carlin, noting the intense reactions it has provoked.

| 2 | | Elon Musk stated that his AI startup, xAI, is not raising capital despite a Financial Times report claiming otherwise. Citing four unidentified sources, FT wrote that xAI was in talks to secure as much as $6B in equity capital at a proposed valuation of $20B, although the terms could likely change. More: - After the FT report came out, Musk posted on X that "xAI is not raising capital, and I have had no conversations with anyone in this regard."
- To finance xAI, sources told FT that the startup has been in talks with "global investors," including family offices in Hong Kong,
- They claimed that Musk's xAI had approached Middle Eastern sovereign wealth funds and investors in Japan and South Korea.
Zoom out: - Musk also refuted a Bloomberg report claiming xAI had secured $500M toward a $1B funding target.
- That report also alleged the company was discussing a valuation of up to $20B.
- "This is fake news from Bloomberg," Musk later wrote on X.
About xAI: - xAI introduced Grok, an AI chatbot trained to deliver "witty" and "rebellious" answers, last November.
- Musk has positioned the bot as "anti-woke" compared to more mainstream bots like ChatGPT.
- X.AI has been described as a company that aims "to understand the true nature of the universe." Its team reportedly includes former engineers from Google, DeepMind, Twitter, Tesla, Microsoft, and OpenAI.

| 5 | | The U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) are investigating GM's Cruise after one of its self-driving cars hit and dragged a pedestrian in San Francisco last October. According to Cruise's third-party report, executives failed to disclose in a post-accident briefing that the autonomous vehicle had dragged the victim 20 feet at 7 mph, worsening her injuries. The victim was initially struck by a human-powered vehicle and landed in the Cruise vehicle's path. More: - According to the report, the vehicle mistakenly detected a side instead of a frontal collision and tried to pull over instead of stopping.
- Over 100 Cruise employees, including senior leaders and legal staff, knew about the dragging incident but did not reveal it in post-accident meetings with the NHTSA, DMV, and San Francisco Mayor's Office.
- The company planned to show a video to explain the incident, but playback issues prevented it from being viewed clearly, and employees didn't verbally confirm the details.
- Cruise acknowledged that it "failed to live up to the justifiable expectations of regulators and the communities we serve... [and] also fell woefully short of our own expectations."
Zoom out: - The DOJ and SEC have now joined multiple government investigations into Cruise, including the California Department of Motor Vehicles, the California Public Utilities Commission, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
