| 1 | | Secondary market transactions are "picking up" as the valuation spread has improved, Morgan Stanley's co-head of global private markets, Kevin Swan, told Crunchbase. The secondary markets could rebound this year after a two-year lull, considering the influx of dedicated secondary funds and the investment opportunities presented by strong mature companies. Payments giant Stripe recently facilitated a secondary market transaction for employees and investors, which saw its valuation surge by 30% to $65B. More: - Carta's senior corporate coverage manager, Luke Kirrane, noticed that the average transaction value fell from $50M-$60M a few years ago to less than $10M.
- Last year, about 40% to 50% of the deals were structured as buybacks, per Kirrane.
Zoom out: - Crunchbase estimates that secondary funds totaled nearly $118B last year, with several investors launching dedicated vehicles to capitalize on the market opportunity.
- Last year, Industry Ventures closed its Secondary X fund at $1.5B.

| 2 | | While VC firms are trying to raise new funds to capitalize on the recent crypto market bull run caused by the rally in Bitcoin prices, limited partners are unsure about the hype, wary of past lessons learned from the most recent implosions of Three Arrows Capital and FTX in 2022. What the numbers say: Crypto-focused VCs raised funds worth $5.8B last year, per Galaxy Digital. Fundraising slumped last year after touching $20B in 2021 and $38B in 2022. Crypto-focused VCs are struggling to raise new funds due to a crowded market where differentiation is difficult. "Too many venture capital firms in the space are raising at the moment and the competition is really high, but the demand isn't as strong as it once was, so they are struggling," notes L1 Digital AG's managing partner Ray Hindi. Relevance: Despite the current market hype, the actual distributed to paid-in capital (DPI) metric for many funds with 2021 vintage is still at zero. This is putting pressure on funds to deliver tangible DPI returns, with some LPs expecting payouts by the end of 2024. Limited partners are scrutinizing funds' ability to generate actual payouts versus just rising paper valuations from the market rally. | | |

Wasoko's implied valuation after the markdown was $260M, roughly half compared to its $501M valuation from Q4 2022. - It is currently focussing on its three largest GMV markets: Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania.
