It's an OG wellness hack turned TikTok-famous trend that's gone viral as a way to help you lose weight, regulate your digestion, make your skin "glowier," and more. Unlike many recent TikTok wellness fads, drinking some warm lemon water every day certainly isn't going to hurt you. But whether you can depend on it as a legit health aid is a different story. A: You may have seen some pretty bold claims about the benefits of starting your day with warm lemon water. But, like most things that sound too good to be true, the benefits of warm lemon water have been greatly exaggerated (it's probably not going to boost your immune system or balance your pH, for example). However, there are definitely some reasons to sip on lemon water throughout the day: May improve digestion: The citric acid in lemon juice may help increase gastric acid secretion in the stomach, which helps break down food. Drinking warm liquids (including warm coffee or tea) may also help stimulate digestion and "get things moving." Will help you stay hydrated: If you enjoy the taste of lemon water, you will be more likely to drink more of it. Adequate hydration is essential for our organs to function properly. Staying hydrated may help you feel more energized, improve the look of your skin, and help you feel fuller before a meal. (However, keep in mind that hydration is not exclusive to lemon water.) Can help you eat less sugar: If you start your day with warm lemon water as a replacement for juice or a sweetened coffee drink, you will consume less sugar and fewer calories. Boosts vitamin C intake: Getting enough vitamin C is important for cell health. The citric acid in lemons may also help prevent kidney stones. Citrate (a component of citric acid) can temporarily make urine less acidic, but this has zero effect on blood pH. Our kidneys keep our pH right where it needs to be.
