1 The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Israel to enable unimpeded aid flows into Gaza. The order was issued as a provisional measure in a case brought by South Africa that accuses Israel of genocidal acts in the Palestinian territory. More: The ICJ ordered Israel to open land crossings to allow food, water, and other supplies to reach the Gaza Strip. The ruling came after South Africa requested more provisional measures from the ICJ to prevent starvation in Gaza. Israel urged the ICJ to reject the request and said South Africa's accusations were "morally repugnant." Israel has denied allegations that it is blocking aid and accused South Africa of undermining its "right and obligation," to defend Israeli citizens. Zoom Out: In January, the ICJ ordered Israel to stop all activities that may breach the 1948 Genocide Convention. The ICJ's orders are legally binding but it lacks the power to enforce them.

2 What the numbers say: Amazon Web Services' (AWS) holdings of office and data center real estate more than doubled between 2020 and 2023. AWS is expanding its data centers ahead of an expected surge in global demand for artificial intelligence (AI) services. Google, Microsoft and ChatGPT developer OpenAI are widely recognized as the world's AI leaders. However, Amazon is developing tools to compete with ChatGPT and other leading AI technologies. Amazon recently announced plans to invest $2.75B in AI startup Anthropic, bringing its total stake in the OpenAI rival to $4B. AI-related workloads will account for about $26.9B of AWS' revenue in 2025, up from $18.2B this year, according to New Street Research analyst Dan Salmon. Amazon intends to spend nearly $150B over the next 15 years on its data center infrastructure.

3 Sam Bankman-Fried received a 25-year prison sentence on Thursday for defrauding FTX customers and investors. U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan rejected Bankman-Fried's claims that FTX customers did not lose money when the cryptocurrency exchange collapsed in 2022.  More: Bankman-Fried was accused of using FTX customer deposits to shore up Alameda Research, a hedge fund affiliate.  He claimed that he did not know Alameda had spent the deposits.  Kaplan said Bankman-Fried's claim was a lie and criticized him for showing "no remorse". Kaplan ordered Bankman-Fried to forfeit $11B. Bankman-Fried has pledged to appeal his conviction and sentence. Zoom Out: Bankman-Fried was convicted of fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering in November. Three former FTX associates who pleaded guilty to related crimes testified against him.

4 GOOD NEWS: Slovakia ceased production at its only remaining coal-fired power plant this week. The country plans to shift all its energy production to nuclear and renewable sources by the middle of 2024. More: The Vojany coal plant will shut down operations completely by the end of June. The plant has produced minimal energy in recent years due to economic struggles. Its owner, Slovenské elektrárne, plans to use the site for sustainable energy solutions, such as battery storage.  Zoom Out: Vojany was once the largest power plant in former Czechoslovakia. Belgium, Austria, Sweden, and Portugal have already phased out coal-fired energy production.

5 Barack Obama and Bill Clinton attended a record-breaking fundraiser with President Joe Biden in New York City on Thursday. The two former U.S. presidents defended Biden's handling of the U.S. economy and his policies toward the ongoing Gaza crisis.  More: Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer attended the event which raised over $25M for Biden's re-election campaign. Biden, Obama, and Clinton participated in an hour-long discussion moderated by Stephen Colbert.  Demonstrators protesting the war in Gaza gathered outside the event at New York's Radio City Music Hall. Some protestors attended the event and disrupted proceedings multiple times. Zoom Out: Biden's campaign team seeks to extend its funding lead over presumptive Republican challenger Donald Trump. Trump currently has a narrow lead over Biden in national polls, according to RealClearPolitics.

6 Warsaw dismissed the Polish commander of Eurocorps, a multinational NATO-EU battlegroup. The dismissed commander, Jarosław Gromadziński, was recalled to Poland to be investigated by counterintelligence authorities. More: The probe relates to Gromadziński's "security clearance," Poland's defense ministry said.  Poland reportedly briefed its allies before the dismissal and said the decision was an "internal matter." The dismissal came as a "surprise" to top Eurocorps officials, the Financial Times reports.  Gromadziński has denied any misconduct. Zoom Out: Gromadziński's dismissal comes amid rising security concerns in Poland after Russian missiles breached its airspace.
