| 6 | | The U.K. and the European Union are reportedly finalizing a deal to delay post-Brexit tariffs on electric vehicles. Barring an agreement, EVs would be subject to a 10% tariff if less than 45% of their value is local. More: - European automakers have argued that the tariffs could cost them $4.5B and benefit Chinese automakers.
- One of the reported proposals would consist of a two-year delay prior to enacting the tariffs. Germany has reportedly backed a delay; however, it has been reported that France is opposed.
- EU automakers estimate that failure to delay tariffs could reduce production to 480,000 vehicles over three years.
- "While we appreciate that efforts are being made to prevent 10% tariffs being levied on electric vehicles in just a few months, we stand by our call for a simple, medium-term solution: extend the current phase-in period for battery rules by three years," said Sigrid de Vries, ACEA director general.
