| 2 | | Truist Financial stock is up 6.67% after it was reported that the financial services company plans to sell its insurance business. What happened: Semafor reported that Truist plans to sell Truist Insurance Holdings to private equity firm Stone Point for ~$10B. The proposed deal comes after U.S. banking regulators implemented changes that may lead banks like Truist to sell secondary parts of their businesses. Semafor reported that the success of the deal could depend on Stone Point's ability to raise enough debt to cover the cost. Relevance: Stone Point bought a 20% stake in Truist Insurance Holdings in April in a deal that valued the company at $14.75B. When the deal was announced in February, before the banking turmoil that prompted reforms from financial regulators, Truist said that it planned to retain the remaining 80% of the insurance business. | | |

| 3 | | Ireland said it plans to use a budget surplus to create a €100B ($106B) sovereign wealth fund. The Irish state is flush with cash thanks to the corporate tax payments of major technology companies headquartered in Dublin, giving the island republic a surplus of 2.9% of gross national income last year. More: - Finance Minister Michael McGrath will introduce laws mandating that the Irish government invest 0.8% of nominal GDP into the fund annually between 2024 and 2035.
- That translates to roughly €4.3B ($4.56B) per year.
- The Future Ireland Fund could reach €100B by 2035. Once the fund money is available in 2040, it could be allocated to pension costs or the green energy transition.
- McGrath said Ireland should take advantage of the "window of opportunity" to invest in the future.
Zoom Out: - Ireland will also create a €14B ($15B) fund focused on infrastructure and climate spending that could help the country meet greenhouse gas emissions targets.

| 4 | | GOOD NEWS: Irish-American entrepreneur Charles Feeney gave away nearly all of his $8B fortune before he died on Monday at the age of 92. Over the course of four decades, Feeney made scores of anonymous donations to universities, non-profits, medical institutions, and other groups around the world. More: - He made more visible donations in Northern Ireland, where his support of Sinn Fein and the Ulster Defense Association, the two warring factions during the Irish Troubles, contributed to the negotiation of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.
- Feeney donated $2.7B to fund the construction of around 1,000 buildings in five continents but his name does not appear on them.
- He made much of his money by starting duty-free shops, but also invested in real estate, clothing, and technology businesses.
- When he was in his 50s, Feeney turned away from the life of luxury and jet-setting that he had become accustomed to and started giving his money away through a philanthropic foundation.
- When Feeney signed the Giving Pledge established by Bill Gates and Warren Buffet in 2010, he said:
- "I cannot think of a more personally rewarding and appropriate use of wealth than to give while one is living, to personally devote oneself to meaningful efforts to improve the human condition."

| 5 | | Chinese property giant Country Garden failed to repay a HK$60M ($7.74M) loan and is expected to default on its U.S. dollar bonds and other offshore debt obligations. A potential default by Country Garden would worsen an ongoing crisis in China's real state market. More: - The company's contracted sales dropped 44% in the first three quarters of 2023, including an 81% plunge in September.
- Country Garden is one of the most surprising casualties of China's deepening housing crisis since it was considered a model developer just a year ago.
- The company has a massive debt load, with $187B in liabilities as of June, including $15.3B in international bonds and loans.
- Last month, it narrowly avoided defaulting on its dollar bonds by making interest payments during a grace period.
- Country Garden's hiring of financial advisers suggests a debt restructuring is imminent, which could further undermine investor and homebuyer sentiment in China's property market.
Zoom Out: - China Evergrande Group, another major Chinese property developer, defaulted on international bonds in 2021 and filed for U.S. bankruptcy protection in August 2023.
- Chinese authorities have tried various measures to revive the real state market, but monthly new-home sales continue to fall.

- The walkout, combined with an actors' strike that began during the summer, brought film and television production in the U.S. to a virtual halt for several months.
- WGA leaders urged members to support striking actors who are still negotiating a new contract with Hollywood studios.
