| Happy Monday! The mystery-thriller "Reptile," which screened at the Toronto Film Festival earlier this fall, made its way onto Netflix last week, but you'd never know it. The streamer didn't really promote the film at all, and it didn't appear on any of their published release schedules or calendars, even the ones they sent to press. That's how I missed it on Friday, and failed to include it on the Daily Calendar. (I added it to today's entry. It's on Netflix now in the US.) This happens more than you'd think. I'm pretty good about scanning around both the official line-ups published by the streaming platforms and social media, so I don't miss any big releases, but sometimes things STILL get by me. I have no idea why streamers don't do a better job of at least this small task, posting accurate information about what they're putting up on their own platforms. Seems like not that much to ask, even if sometimes things change in real-time. Enjoy today's issue (and, potentially, "Reptile"!) See you back here tomorrow. Lon p/lon-harris | |
| 1 | | Negotiations resumed on Monday between representatives of acting guild SAG-AFTRA and Hollywood studios and streamers. This marked the first time the two groups met face-to-face in around 80 days. More: - Though the writers strike ended last week, SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) remain considerably far apart on their negotiations.
- As was the case with the final round of WGA negotiations, a number of studio chiefs will sit in on the talks personally, including Donna Langley of NBCU, David Zaslav of Warner Bros. Discovery, Ted Sarandos of Netflix, and Bob Iger of Disney.
- SAG's negotiating committee is led by recently re-elected president Fran Drescher, chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, and chief contract officer Ray Rodriguez.
- Deadline notes that revenue sharing, allowing actors to share in the success of high-performing shows on streaming platforms, will likely be a key sticking point in these negotiations.

| 2 | | According to a report in Business F1 magazine, Apple is considering an exclusive streaming rights deal for Formula 1 racing. The deal would apparently be valued at around $2 billion per year. More: - The report indicates that Apple has been emboldened by the success of MLS Season Pass, and hopes to make a similar "Apple F1 Pass" available as a standalone subscription.
- Formula 1 rights in the US are currently held by ESPN through 2025, so that's when any potential Apple deal would begin; some global F1 deals don't expire until 2029.
- Apple is currently producing a scripted F1 film starring Brad Pitt, and has also greenlit a documentary on driver Lewis Hamilton.

| 4 | | Bankrupt regional broadcaster Diamond Sports Group has just weeks to set up new carriage deals in order to avoid liquidation. The company owes major rights payments to both the National Basketball Association and National Hockey League within the next few days. More: - Diamond owns the Bally Sports-branded regional sports networks; if it's ultimately shut down, that could have a major impact on sports fans across the US.
- In response, Diamond is urging cable companies to sign new mutli-year carriage agreements, while also asking leagues for extensions that would potentially reduce its payments.
- Diamond is also trying to negotiate distribution deals with cable replacement streaming platforms such as YouTube TV or Hulu + Live TV, in hopes of generating additional revenue.
- Should Diamond fold entirely, it's possible the leagues themselves could devise supplemental channels for fans to watch in-market games, such as through the NBA app.
