| Hi Insiders! In today's edition of Inside Podcasting, we discuss an interesting study that highlights how the infotainment system in your car affects your listening. We also look at September's top podcasts in the Triton Rankers findings, research that finds that podcasters are the most trusted media personalities, and some great suggestions for podcasts to listen to this weekend. If you find this newsletter useful, please share it with your friends and colleagues. Thank you. Christopher p/chris951156 | |
| 1 | | Edison Research has released the findings of a Share of Ear dataset that specifically looked at how having Apple CarPlay or Android Auto in your vehicle affects your listening habits. The study found that listeners are twice as likely to stream audio in their cars than those who don't have smartphone-based infotainment systems in their cars. More: - Edison Research asked people 13 and up if they had either Apple CarPlay or Android Auto in their car and then split the answers into two subsets: those that have one and those that have none.
- Those who have neither are more likely to listen to AM/FM radio, as it is their main source of audio entertainment in their vehicle. Those without an infotainment system spend the majority of their in-car time listening to radio, as 67% responded that they listen to AM/FM radio, compared to 46% of listeners that have one.
- Streaming audio doubled in infotainment-enabled cars, as 18% of respondents answered they stream, compared to 9% for those without a system.
- Podcasts received 7% of the listening vote for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto users compared to just 4% of non-users. SiriusXM had 19% of the infotainment vote compared to 12% for non-users.
- Even if you have infotainment systems, 10% of people said they listen to other forms of audio, such as CDs. 8% of non-users responded as such.

| 2 | | What the data says: There was a lot of movement in the Top 10 this month, mostly based on the fact that NPR is temporarily excluded this month due to planned data collection migration. Last month, NPR had three of the top 10 podcasts in terms of weekly average downloads. But without it, CNN 5 Things saw the biggest jump in the Top 10, going from 13 to 7. Dateline NBC jumped Crime Junkie to go from 3 to 1. Morbid jumped from 5 to 3, and The Dan Bongino Show moved from 7 to 4. Relevance: Triton Digital released the U.S. Podcast Ranker for September, and the top 100 shows saw a lot of movement. Each month, Triton Digital releases this for top podcasts by weekly average downloads and weekly average users. Oftentimes, the top 10-20 are relatively the same, but with the absence of NPR's data, there was a lot of shakeup this month. Both Wondery and the SiriusXM Podcast Network led the way with three shows in the Top 10. More data: Multiple shows made their debuts in the Top 100. Murder in Apartment 12 debuted at 51, The Rich Eisen Show premiered at 86, and Dave and Chuck The Freak: Full Show came in at 91. 5 Things checked in at 92, Scamfluencers at 96, Lovett or Leave It at 97, Girls Next Level at 99, and Deadline: White House at 100. | | |

| 3 | | A study by Acast found that podcasters are the most trusted media personalities among consumers. According to the research, half of podcast listeners trust podcasters, the most of any tested medium. More: - 64% of podcast listeners actively seek out podcasters and make sure to seek out their content because of their level of trust.
- 75% have listened to a podcaster for a product endorsement, and 70% have listened to a YouTuber for one, which could very well cross over in similarity, as many YouTubers are podcasters.
- 79% of respondents answered that YouTubers give good product recommendations, and 70% of podcasters do.
- "Trust in U.S. media has been deteriorating in recent years as a result of socio-political unrest and conflicting coverage by news outlets on the same events," said Acast Director of Research and Insights Tommy Walters. "As U.S. consumers have lost confidence in traditional media, they have increasingly turned to podcasters as a source of truth."

| 5 | | Vox Media Podcast Network announced the upcoming debut of the latest subject of its Land of the Giants podcast series. This season of the series will look at the story of Twitter, now known as X, and the first episode will premiere on Oct. 25, exactly one year after Elon Musk took ownership of the platform. More: - Hosted by Vox's Peter Kafka, Land of the Giants has looked at technology companies and their place in our world today and how they got there.
- The previous seasons have looked at Facebook/Meta, the world of dating apps, Apple, and more.
- The four-episode season will look at how Twitter came to be and helped launch the broader social media movement. It will also look at the company's struggle to find a profitable business model and how Musk's involvement has changed the company.
- The season will feature interviews with Twitter insiders and users, including former Twitter CEO Dick Costolo and the company's first VP of Product, Jason Goldman.
- "I've been using Twitter since its launch in 2006 — I believe my first tweet was about going Christmas shopping — and started reporting on it soon after that," said Kafka. "Everyone has a different feed, which makes it a challenge to cover, but that's also the fun part: Starting all the way back with its founders, people have wanted different things out of this company, which means you have a nearly infinite amount of stories to tell. In this series, we dive into those stories and explain why any of this matters."
