| Hello everyone, and a very happy Indigenous Peoples' Day to our American readers! You may have noticed that I've pulled sports programming from the daily calendars I post in the newsletter. It's a change I hesitated to make, because the goal is always to make Inside Streaming as information-dense and helpful as possible. Still, as more and more live sports are making their way on to streaming services, the list itself was just getting too cumbersome. The Friday "weekend calendar" in particular was getting completely dominated by sports listings, not just football and baseball but track & field events, golf, cycling, motocross, and beyond. There was no way to keep up without making this basically TV Guide 2023 and not a newsletter. My thinking was, by this point, if you're a dedicated viewer of a certain sport or event, it's probably easier for you to monitor that for yourself rather than me trying to update a calendar about everything happening in every league and venue. Still... I hate removing a feature if it's being actively used. So if there's a certain kind of sports streaming coverage you'd like to see that I'm no longer doing, feel free to hit REPLY on any of these emails and let me know. I'm not opposed to some kind of compromise that keeps some live sports in the calendar, as long as the newsletter remains readable. Thanks and enjoy today's issue! Lon p/lon-harris | |

| 2 | | Filmmaker Ridley Scott confirmed that his 4-hour "Napoleon" director's cut will debut on Apple TV+. In an interview with Total Film, Scott suggested Sony will distribute a shorter cut to movie theaters before the director's cut debuts exclusively on Apple's streaming platform. More: - Scott says he's currently editing the "Napoleon" director's cut, and anticipates that it will run around four hours and 10 minutes in length.
- Apple declined to comment on the report.
- Scott said the film includes re-enactments of six historical battles, but because he used 11-14 cameras in unison, the entire production took just 62 days to shoot.
- The film stars Joaquin Pheonix -- who previously collaborated with Scott on "Gladiator" -- as the French general-turned-dictator, and Vanessa Kirby as his wife, Empress Joséphine.
- "Napoleon" opens theatrically on November 22; no Apple TV+ release date has been set.

| 5 | | Netflix ended an experiment in Kenya that provided free access for mobile-only subscribers. The free subscribers received access to about 25% of the Netflix catalog, along with advertisements. More: - The goal was to see how many additional subscribers the service could convert by switching to an entirely free, ad-supported model.
- Netflix has apparently decided against the idea of offering an entirely no-cost plan.
- The company told Reuters that it learned a lot from the test, but would focus on low-cost ad-supported plans moving forward.

| 6 | | Netflix Productions UK, one of the streamer's British subsidiaries, spent around $10.2 million on content in 2022, an 11% increase from the year. The jump was mostly due to inflation, however, as opposed to a surge in new productions. More: - A production boom resulted in skyrocketing costs in the British film and TV industries in 2022, compounded by rising costs of everyday goods like food, fuel, and energy.
- Netflix does, however, have a significant footprint in UK media, producing hit shows including "Bridgerton," "Sex Education," "The Crown," "Top Boy," and "Heartstopper."
- In 2020, Netflix doubled its overall UK production budget to $1 billion.
