| 1 | | Tom Hanks says an unknown advertiser used an AI-generated version of him to promote dental plans without the actor's permission. Hanks posted a warning on Instagram, disassociating himself from the AI-generated video. More: - Hanks has previously voiced concerns about AI in TV and filmmaking, saying that actors knew there would be an "ability to take zeros and ones inside a computer and turn it into a face and a character."
- Hanks mentioned that with AI and deepfake tech, anyone can recreate themselves at any age, potentially allowing AI versions of actors to perform indefinitely.
- A CGI version of Hanks was used in the 2004 film "The Polar Express," and the actor was also digitally de-aged in scenes from the 2022 movie "A Man Called Otto."
Zoom out: - Striking SAG-AFTRA workers are particularly concerned about using actors' digital likenesses created with AI technology.
- The U.S. writers' strike, which ended last week, centered in part on AI's potential to undermine writers' work, leading to restrictions on its use in film and TV through an agreement between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television.

| 2 | | Humane, a startup founded by ex-Apple designers, unveiled its wearable AI assistant device at a Paris fashion show. Supermodel Naomi Campbell was the first person outside of Humane to publicly wear the "Ai Pin." The device can be pinned to clothing and acts as a personal assistant, answering spoken questions and projecting information onto hands or nearby objects. More: - With a mini-projector, camera, and speaker, the Ai Pin is a screenless standalone device with AI capabilities powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon technology.
- Similar to "Star Trek: The Next Generation" communicator badges, the wearable can translate languages, make phone calls, summarize emails and calendar invites, and recognize objects using computer vision.
- It offers AI-powered functions, including optical recognition, and prioritizes privacy with no wake word or "always on" listening.
- After teasing the device at Coperni's Paris fashion show, Humane is planning a full unveiling on Nov. 9.
Zoom out: - Humane has now raised at least $230M, including a $100M round announced in March, from investors including Microsoft, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Volvo Cars Tech Fund.
- The company is capitalizing on the fast-growing global wearable tech market, which is projected to surpass $392B by 2030.

| 3 | | Testifying at today's Google antitrust trial, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella warned that Google could use its search monopoly and ad profits to dominate the AI-powered search market. Nadella argued Google's access to vast search data through default agreements could give it an unbeatable advantage in generative AI. More: - According to Nadella, Google has the financial capacity to secure exclusive content rights from publishers to improve its AI-based search, outperforming competitors.
- Nadella compared tech companies' effort to develop content libraries for training language models to the early days of distribution deals.
- "This is going to become even harder to compete in the AI age with someone who has that core… advantage," Nadella said.
Zoom out: - In the trial, the U.S. Department of Justice has accused Google of unlawfully maintaining a monopoly through multi-billion-dollar deals that keep its search engine the default on mobile devices and browsers.
- In response, Google's lead lawyer cited instances when Microsoft secured default status on computers and mobile phones, yet users still overwhelmingly preferred Google over Bing.
