But according to a new study, the spice that gives curries and other dishes their earthy pungency may also have the power to soothe your stomach. Turmeric — specifically its active compound curcumin — matched prescription drugs at quelling indigestion in a recent randomized trial. But should you make this aromatic golden spice your new go-to for tummy troubles? Well, a recent study out of Thailand may have found just that. The research compared the effectiveness of curcumin and the prescription drug omeprazole, and both combined in 206 people with functional dyspepsia (aka indigestion). The small study, which was the first head-to-head trial of the two remedies, found that taking 250mg capsules of curcumin four times a day for 28 days significantly improved symptoms and was comparable to taking 20mg of omeprazole daily over the same time period. These findings support a body of evidence that shows curcumin's anti-inflammatory properties can reduce gut discomfort. Traditional Indian medicine has used turmeric for stomach and liver issues for centuries. And many natural indigestion remedies use anti-inflammatory spices like ginger and fennel. While this new study sounds promising, larger human studies are still needed to confirm the safety and effectiveness of using curcumin for indigestion. Even then, moderation is key, as excessive turmeric or curcumin may cause:   • indigestion and stomach upset.   • worsened reflux symptoms.   • ulcers (with very high doses). It's important not to take turmeric supplements with blood thinners including aspirin and warfarin as it can increase your risk of bleeding.. The takeaway? For chronic indigestion, turmeric may offer lasting relief without the risk of serious side effects associated with drugs like omeprazole.
