| 1 | | Universal Music Group and other publishers are suing AI company Anthropic over copyrighted song lyrics via its chatbot Claude 2. The lawsuit, filed yesterday in Tennessee federal court, claims Anthropic scraped and misused a vast number of copyrighted songs to train its AI model. More: - The lawsuit claims that Anthropic infringed on publishers' rights by using lyrics from over 500 songs, including tracks like "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys and "Halo" by Beyoncé, to train its underlying model.
- As a result, Claude 2 can be prompted to generate lyrics that match or closely resemble the original songs, the suit claims.
- Additional plaintiffs in the case include Concord and ABKCO.
Zoom out: - Anthropic launched Claude 2, its latest AI chatbot, in July. The bot is capable of summarizing up to 75,000 words, higher than OpenAI's ChatGPT, which reports say can handle around 3,000 words.

| 2 | | An Apple analyst says Apple could bring generative AI to the iPhone and iPad as early as 2024. Jeff Pu, who specializes in Apple's supply chain for Haitong International Securities, claims Apple is gearing up to build hundreds of AI servers this year and next, paving the way for GenAI integration in late 2024 at the earliest. Details: Pu anticipates Apple will offer both cloud-based and edge AI, when data is processed offline directly on the device. According to MacRumors, meeting a target of late 2024 means Apple could potentially introduce generative AI features in iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. Still: In August, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed the company's progress in generative AI lags behind competitors, and there is no sign that the company will launch AI services or products in 2024. The update contradicts Bloomberg, stating that Apple could make a significant AI announcement in 2024. The bigger picture: The move comes as Apple increases AI hiring and quietly pushes forward in AI development, though the company still trails behind other tech giants in terms of AI employees compared to its overall workforce. According to Bloomberg, Apple has had multiple teams collaborating on AI projects in recent months. Apple has already created its own framework called "Ajax" to build large language models and has used it to develop a chatbot referred to as "Apple GPT" by some engineers. Q: What types of generative AI features would you like to see for the iPhone or iPad? Let us know your thoughts here. | | |

| 3 | | OpenAI has released DALL-E 3, its latest text-to-image generator, to paid premium and enterprise ChatGPT users. DALL-E 3 renders better-quality and more realistic images, especially with longer prompts, and can better handle complex content like text and human hands. More: - As of Thursday, ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise customers now have access to DALL-E 3 within the ChatGPT app.
- DALL-E 3 was also recently added to Bing Chat and Bing Image Generator.
- The image generator adds safeguards against harmful content, rejecting requests for images in the style of living artists or public figures.
- To address copyright and other issues, artists can choose not to have their artwork used for training future OpenAI text-to-image models.
Zoom out: - In testing, CNET's Stephen Shankland said he found Dall-E 3 to be "a big step up from Dall-E 2" launched last year.
- "Images were more vivid, detailed, and often entertaining," he wrote. "And they were more convincing, with fewer cases of distracting weirdness."

| 4 | | Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee and several religious authors are suing companies for using their books to train AI models without permission. The proposed class-action suit alleges that Meta, Microsoft, Bloomberg, and EleutherAI used the "Books3" dataset, which gathered data from thousands of pirated books. More: - The authors argue that using pirated or stolen books in AI datasets doesn't compensate authors and publishers fairly.
- Their lawsuit alleges that the companies were fully aware that the datasets contained copyrighted works.
- Non-profit research group EleutherAI included Books3 in its larger open-source dataset, called the Pile, for companies to train AI systems.
- Meta used the Pile and Books3 to train Llama, its large language model. Bloomberg also used Books3 to train its finance-oriented chatbot called BloombergGPT.
- The lawsuit seeks damages and an injunction against further use of their works.

More: - YouTube users could apply the AI tool to recreate songs with a musician's voice or generate new music mimicking a singer.
- The Alphabet-owned platform is now in talks with music companies to acquire rights for training the tool with songs from their catalogs, with no major deals confirmed yet, according to Bloomberg sources.
Zoom out: - Last month, YouTube unveiled four new AI-powered tools, including AI Insights for generating video ideas from audience preferences and "Dream Screen" for creating backgrounds in YouTube Shorts.
