| 2 | | India's government is asking tech companies to seek approval before publicly releasing AI tools that are "unreliable" or still being tested. While not legally binding, the new advisory from India's IT ministry signals that "this is the future of regulation," IT Deputy Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said. More: - Chandrasekhar clarified that the advisory targets "untested AI platforms" on India's internet created by large companies, not startups.
- The advisory calls on tech companies to ensure their products and services aren't biased or discriminatory and don't "threaten the integrity of the electoral process."
- It also asks tech giants to "appropriately" label that their AI models' outputs can be unreliable.
Zoom out: - The advisory has surprised some industry leaders, with startups and VCs worried it could weaken India's global AI competitiveness, according to TechCrunch.
- It comes after India's government criticized Google's Gemini chatbot for generating a "biased" response labeling Prime Minister Narendra Modi's policies as fascist.

| 3 | | A BBC Panorama investigation uncovered many AI-generated photos of Donald Trump appearing alongside Black individuals. The fake images appear to have been created by some Trump supporters and have no ties to the former president's campaign, according to the BBC. More: - The online images show signs of being AI-generated, such as missing fingers and unnaturally smooth skin.
- Some showed Trump posing with Black men on a porch, with the captions claiming Trump stopped his motorcade for the photo.
- Mark Kaye, a conservative radio host, shared an AI-created image of Trump with Black women to his 1+ million social media followers, according to the BBC.
- Kaye acknowledged that he and his team created one of the images, arguing that if a photo on Facebook sways someone's vote, the issue lies with the individual, not the post.
Zoom out: - The AI photos appear similar to disinformation strategies from the 2020 election that were aimed at the Black community, according to Cliff Albright of Black Voters Matter.
- "There have been documented attempts to target disinformation to Black communities again, especially younger Black voters," he told the BBC.

| 4 | | The D.C. metro area overtook the San Francisco Bay Area in number of AI job postings during December, according to a recent report by JLL. The real estate company believes federal spending and government contracts have made metro D.C.'s tech ecosystem less vulnerable to market changes. What the numbers show: In December, the D.C. area had 1,110 AI-related job postings, slightly above the Bay Area's 1,076. New York was a distant third with 574 postings, followed by Dallas at 407 and Boston with 392. What it means: Despite the Bay Area's status as an AI development hub, tech firms there have been cutting staff due to economic and other challenges. Conversely, D.C.'s tech sector, bolstered by federal spending and government contracts, shows more resilience to market changes, according to JLL. This stability, along with the area's industries like defense, healthcare, and finance, is driving a need for AI professionals in the D.C. area. Meanwhile, Northern Virginia's huge data center capacity is also contributing to the demand. Still: About half of the AI-related job openings in D.C. require government security clearances. | | |
