| Hello again and thanks for opening today's Inside Streaming brief. I watched Amazon's "Road House" remake last night, and while I always appreciate the ease and accessibility of streaming... I do think it's kind of a shame this particular movie won't screen in theaters. It's the kind of goofy, over-the-top, live-action cartoon that's fun to watch with an audience. Alone on a couch, it felt like I was only getting maybe 70% of the authentic "Road House" experience. Also, I'm not sure what Conor McGregor is doing in this film. It's not QUITE acting. It's sort of a blend of film acting and pro wrestling, where he just sort of grins and mugs and makes faces the whole time, before picking guys up by their necks and throwing them across a room. But it's definitely intriguing. I didn't hate it. Lon p/lon-harris | |
| 1 | | Netflix's series adaptation of the Liu Cixin sci-fi novel "3 Body Problem" has sparked controversy in the author's native China. Though Netflix subscriptions are not available in China, many locals access the content via virtual private networks (VPNs) or internet piracy. More: - Portions of the show are set during China's Cultural Revolution of the 1960s and '70s, a relative rarity for Western media; troubling scenes includ a physics professor being denounced and beaten by his students and colleagues.
- According to CNN, the sequences have been divisive among Chinese viewers, with some noting that the depictions are historically accurate, while others accuse the series of "political correctness" and purposefully disparaging China.
- Cixin told The New York Times in 2019 that he had considered including depictions of the Cultural Revolution in the novel, but worried that they would be removed by government censors.
- The longer and more book-accurate Chinese adaptation "Three-Body Problem" was released last year; it's currently available to stream in the US on Peacock.

| 2 | | According to Nielsen, Netflix's live-action adaptation of "Avatar: The Last Airbender" was viewed for 2.56 billion minutes in its first four days online. "Avatar" took the #1 spot for the week of February 19 to 25, edging out another Netflix original, the reality dating series "Love is Blind." More: - Season 6 episodes of "Love is Blind" scored 2.41 billion minutes viewed during the same time period, when three new episodes debuted.
- This was the first time in more than a year that two different shows were each viewed for more than 2 billion minutes; the last time it happened, the shows were "Manifest" and "The Crown," which both feature many more episodes.
- The Max period martial arts series "Warrior" moved over to Netflix this week and was viewed for 948 million minutes, taking the #4 spot on the chart.
- The season finale of Max's "True Detective: Night Country" also debuted in mid-February and scored 889 million minutes viewed for the week, though viewership also continued into the next measurement period.
- Though Nielsen's chart for mid-March won't be available for several weeks, early data suggests that Peacock's limited series "Apples Never Fall" is off to a strong start.
