| Happy Monday and thanks once again for opening today's Inside Streaming. Judd Apatow's comments to Vulture -- and his concerns that streamers will favor licensing deals over developing new shows and films -- certainly make some degree of sense. Apatow's a guy who's always got several creative irons in the fire, so if networks and streamers start massively pulling back on the amount of fresh content they're going to produce, he'd likely be among the first to notice. It's entirely possible Apatow has already seen projects that were moving forward at big media companies get paused due to budgetary concerns. But he's also in a prime position to see the other side of this argument. If licensing deals come back in a major way and suddenly classic libraries become more valuable, that's also a potential win for creatives. Sure, fewer new shows are getting funded in an immediate sense, but once you do get a project going and start developing a career, that work is going to keep paying off in a longer-term way. Writers and producers and directors aren't forced to constantly pivot to something new, because they'll continue to earn residuals on the successful work they've already done. Perhaps Apatow knows something I don't, and sees a future in which studios and streamers continually license older shows without paying their creators. But if audiences want to just keep watching "Ballers" forever, I think that's probably okay, so long as the creators of "Ballers" get fairly compensated. Lon p/lon-harris | |

| 6 | | In an interview with Vulture, filmmaker Judd Apatow said he finds streamers licensing classic shows to be a "scary" development for creators. - Apatow noted that he's not immune from the pleasures of rewatching licensed content, and particularly highlighted "Deadwood" and other work by creator David Milch as personal favorites.
- The "This is 40" and "The Bubble" vet pointed to the box office success of Universal's "Oppenheimer" as an indication that "big risks" can still pay off for Hollywood studios.
