| 1 | | The United Nations General Assembly unanimously approved a resolution supporting safe, trustworthy, and human-centric AI. The U.S. first proposed the nonbinding rules, which were co-sponsored by China and 121 other countries. More: - The resolution calls for the U.N.'s 193 member states to adopt "effective safeguards" for AI use and promote "responsible and inclusive" development.
- It advocates for the protection of personal data, AI risk assessments, and the safeguarding of human rights.
- The AI resolution targets using AI to advance the U.N.'s 2030 goals, including ending hunger and poverty, improving health, and universal education.
- It also clarifies that the U.N's Universal Declaration of Human Rights and its charter's goal of eradicating war also apply to AI development.
- General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding, though they are a reflection of global opinion.

| 2 | | Microsoft has agreed to a $650M deal with Inflection AI to license the startup's AI models and hire most of its staff, sources told Bloomberg and Reuters. Microsoft hired Inflection's co-founders, Mustafa Suleyman and Karen Simonyan, and most of its 70-person team earlier this week. More: - Under the deal, Microsoft will spend $620M to license Inflection's AI models and $30M to address legal matters associated with the mass hiring.
- Inflection will use the licensing fee to repay investors, offering them a 1.5x return, according to sources.
- As a result of the deal, Inflection's AI models will become available on Microsoft Azure.
- Inflection will keep its proprietary technology. The deal has been described as an "acqui-hire" without an actual acquisition.
New employees: - Inflection's Suleyman will now become CEO and Simonyan chief scientist of a newly formed Microsoft AI consumer unit.
- LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman will remain as a director and co-founder at Inflection, with Sean White, former chief R&D officer at Mozilla, stepping in as the new CEO.

| 3 | | A White House report estimates that about 10% of U.S. workers are in jobs highly exposed to AI disruption. These workers "perform the tasks that are most likely to change as a result of AI," according to the Council of Economic Advisers' annual Economic Report of the President. What happened: White House economists identified 16 work activities highly exposed to AI; they then tried to determine which jobs have these AI-exposed activities as fundamental to the role. The researchers found that 20% of workers are in roles highly exposed to AI, which could either benefit or harm them depending on whether AI complements or replaces their tasks. Breaking it down further, they looked at which of these jobs have "low performance" requirements, meaning they are less complex and difficult and presumably more likely to be replaced by AI. What the numbers show: Specifically, 10% of U.S. workers are in positions most vulnerable to AI changes due to their high AI exposure and low complexity. According to the report, these workers "perform the tasks that are most likely to change as a result of AI." It didn't specify which occupations fell into the 10% category. Still: The researchers noted that just because 10% of workers are at high risk from AI, it doesn't mean they'll lose their jobs. According to the report, most jobs involve a mix of tasks, and AI might just take over some of them, letting people concentrate on other aspects and changing the nature of their jobs without cutting them out entirely. | | |
| 4 | | Cohere, a Canadian AI startup developing foundation models for enterprises, is nearing a deal to raise $500M, valuing the company at $5B, according to Reuters. The company was valued at more than $2B in a $270M funding round last June. More: - Cohere creates customizable large language models to power features like interactive chat and text generation in applications.
- The Toronto-based startup competes against OpenAI and Anthropic, with a specific focus on AI applications for businesses.
- Due to its tighter focus, Cohere has lower development costs for its models, as there aren't millions of consumers using them for free, a source told FT.
- Cohere's revenue run rate rose to $22M in March, up from $13M in December, following the launch of its Command-R language model for businesses.
Zoom out - Cohere was founded by Aidan Gomez, Ivan Zhang, and Nick Frosst in 2019.
- Gomez, Cohere's CEO, was among the Google researchers to co-author the landmark "Attention Is All You Need" paper introducing the Transformer architecture.
