| 1 | | Google is considering charging for its AI-powered search capabilities, making the first time it would put a Search feature behind a paywall, the Financial Times reports. Google is testing generative AI in its search engine to answer questions within a chat, generate summaries, and offer follow-up questions and web links. More: - Google's AI-powered search, called Search Generative Experience (SGE), also provides "snapshots" of key information at the top of results.
- Since last year, Google has been testing the feature but recently expanded it to some users who haven't signed up.
- Now, Google is considering adding the AI-powered search features to its premium subscription service.
- The $20-per-month Google One AI Premium already includes access to its advanced Gemini model and AI assistant in Docs and Gmail.
What it would offer: - The paid AI premium search would still show ads alongside search results.
- Google's main search engine would continue to be free.
- Executives are undecided about the details of the launch or if it will happen.
- The company, for example, could still offer parts of SGE to free users.
Zoom out: - Meanwhile, an analysis by Raptive estimates that SGE could slash publishers' ad revenue by up to $2B a year.
- This is because SGE shows answers to search questions directly in the chat, making it less likely users will click on links to publisher websites.
- AI search could cut publishers' organic search traffic by an estimated 20% to 60%, with the food sector and travel particularly hit hard.

| 2 | | The FDA has approved Prenosis' AI tool for diagnosing sepsis, a life-threatening condition that is the body's extreme response to an infection. Prenosis, a Chicago-based startup, plans to roll out the Sepsis ImmunoScore tool to hospitals nationwide and globally. More: - Sepsis ImmunoScore relies on nearly two dozen parameters, such as cell counts and inflammatory biomarkers, to calculate a patient's sepsis risk.
- Its AI system can analyze multiple health markers at once, generating an overall risk score and four risk categories.
- It was built using Prenosis' dataset of over 100,000 blood samples from 25,000+ patients.
Zoom out: - While other AI sepsis diagnostic tools exist, Prenosis is the first to gain FDA clearance.
- It was approved through the FDA's De Novo pathway for novel medical devices.
- Sepsis results in over 350,000 adult deaths or hospice discharges a year in the U.S., and an estimated 11 million deaths annually worldwide.

| 3 | | The U.S. and EU could unveil a collaboration focused on AI oversight and safety during Friday's Trade and Technology Council meeting. The announcement at the transatlantic cooperation forum will reportedly involve the U.K.'s AI Office and the U.S. AI Safety Institute, an official told TechCrunch. More: - Per the official, the "collaboration or dialogue" between the countries' AI agencies would advance AI regulations.
- The agencies would jointly work to create standards for AI development through a roadmap.
- A third aspect, "AI for public good," focuses on promoting AI research and rolling out the tech in developing countries.
- According to Bloomberg, the EU and the U.S. could also use AI to find materials to replace forever chemicals, known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), in chip manufacturing.
Zoom out: - Earlier this week, the U.S. and U.K. signed a landmark agreement to jointly test advanced AI models for safety.
- The broader EU-U.S. partnership would also cover safety, standardization, and the "public good" research.

| 4 | | OpenAI has changed the structure of its corporate venture fund, removing CEO Sam Altman as the owner and manager, per an SEC filing. Ian Hathaway, a partner of OpenAI Startup Fund since 2021, is now managing the fund that invests in startups across industries. More: - The original general partner structure of the fund was temporary, with no personal or financial stakes from Altman, OpenAI told Axios.
- The CEO's removal as owner and a general partner makes things clearer, the company added.
- The fund has drawn attention for its unconventional structure, being similar to a corporate venture but with outside money raised by Altman, who led the investment decisions.
By the numbers: - The fund, with $175M raised from partners like Microsoft but not OpenAI itself, seeks to invest in early-stage startups across sectors like healthcare, law, and education.
- According to Axios, the fund's gross asset value is now over $325M.
