The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has begun an analysis of 3 million vehicles to determine the effectiveness of recalls by Hyundai and Kia over engine fires. The agency had initiated investigations in 2019 on non-crash fire instances involving the 2011 to 2014 models of the Kia Sorento and Optima, the 2010-2015 Kia Soul, and the 2011 to 2014 versions of the Hyundai Sonata and Santa Fe. More: - In Nov. 2020, Hyundai accepted a civil penalty fee of $140M, including an upfront payment of $54M, over its reluctance to issue a recall for a separate issue, in which a manufacturing defect led to engine failures. The settlement included the obligation to spend $40M on safety measures.
- Kia's penalty included $70M, including $27M upfront and $16M on safety performance measures.
- "It's critical that manufacturers appropriately recognize the urgency of their safety recall responsibilities and provide timely and candid information to the agency about all safety issues," said NHTSA Deputy Administrator James Owens.
Zoom Out: - In 2014, Hyundai settled with the NHTSA for $17.35M over the delayed recall of 43,500 Genesis vehicles over a brake defect.
- Hyundai is currently recalling 2,679 Ioniq vehicles, versions from 2017 to 2019, over unintended acceleration.
