OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman said there will be advancements toward artificial general intelligence (AGI) that will make the current ChatGPT chatbot "look like a boring toy." In late November, OpenAI introduced a public demo of ChatGPT, a conversational AI model that can interact with users in a more human-like way. Scary moments: - In a tweet thread posted yesterday, Altman said he anticipates "scary moments as we move towards AGI-level systems" as well as "significant disruptions."
- However, the upsides can be "amazing" enough that it is "well worth overcoming the great challenges to get there," he opined.
- The CEO continued on to say he expects humanity will "see great benefits all along the way," including those that dwarf ChatGPT's capabilities.
ChatGPT improvements: - On a more serious note, he acknowledged that he expects "significant problems" with the use of OpenAI technology over time.
- The AI research lab will do its best but can't anticipate each issue that arises, Altman said.
- He vowed to run a "tight feedback loop" to improve the technology and attempt to make the mistakes "while the stakes are low."
- Meanwhile, OpenAI is learning a great deal from ChatGPT, which Altman said is "going to get a lot better, less annoying, and more useful fast."
- ChatGPT is currently free to try out during the research phase at chat.openai.com.

The U.S. Copyright Office (USCO) announced a proceeding that could revoke copyright protection previously granted to an AI-assisted comic book. While the outcome is not finalized, the USCO said it initiated the reversal because copyrighted works must be created by humans. More: - The graphic novel "Zarya of the Dawn" was created by artist Kris Kashtanova, who wrote the story and used the text-to-image engine Midjourney to create the artwork.
- In September, USCO granted copyright status to the book, which was believed to be the first time an AI-generated work has received that status.
- However, the agency has now informed Kashtanova that it has started a proceeding to reverse the protection, saying it only granted the status due to an error.
- Until then, the copyright is still in effect. Kashtanova is allowed to file a response and appeal the decision.
- Midjourney has reportedly offered to help with the appeal. Kashtanova's attorney said the AI tool was only an "assisting instrument" in the artist's creation of the book.
