Austin Butler, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Kaley Cuoco A number of TV and film stars and creators are scheduled to attend this year's Golden Globes ceremony on January 10. The show returns to broadcast TV this year following a nearly two-year, industry-wide boycott of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which has been accused of unethical practices and criticized for a lack of diversity. More: According to a report in Variety, film nominees Austin Butler, Steven Spielberg, Michelle Williams, Tony Kushner, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Park Chan-wook, Rian Johnson, James Cameron, Guillermo del Toro, and Daniel Craig all plan to attend the ceremony. Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Brendan Gleeson, and Julia Roberts also remain in the "maybe" pile, as do the casts of "Only Murders in the Building" and "Abbott Elementary." "The Whale" star Brendan Fraser is the only celebrity so far to publicly vow not to attend the ceremony; Fraiser accused former HFPA president Philip Berk of groping him at a 2003 event, and claims the organization did not take his complaint seriously. The Globes will air live on NBC and stream on Peacock from Los Angeles' Beverly Hilton Hotel; Jerrod Carmichael hosts this year's event. VARIETY

In a new post to his blog, "Game of Thrones" author George R.R. Martin suggested that uncertainty behind the scenes at Warner Bros. Discovery and HBO Max has started to impact the development of "Game of Thrones" projects. Martin noted that a few planned "Game of Thrones" spinoffs "have been shelved," though he doesn't consider them permanently abandoned, as "you can take something off the shelf as easily as you can put it on the shelf." More: No additional "Thrones" spinoffs have been greenlit post-"House of the Dragon," though Martin suggested that more news could be coming soon. Martin is currently at work on Season 2 of "House of the Dragon," for which he serves as a co-creator and executive producer. He's also developing the series "Wild Cards" at Peacock. DEADLINE

WEEKEND CALENDAR FRIDAY, DECEMBER 30 WHITE NOISE: Satirical comedy-drama feature from writer/director Noah Baumbach, based on the 1985 novel by Don DeLillo. Adam Driver stars as a college professor whose family is forced to leave their comfortable suburban life by a mysterious nearby chemical leak. Greta Gerwig, Raffey Cassidy, André Benjamin, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Don Cheadle co-star. [Netflix] CHICAGO PARTY AUNT: The adult animated series -- based on the popular Twitter account by creator Chris Witaske -- returns for the second half of its first season on Friday. Lauren Ash stars as die-hard Chicago sports and Italian beef enthusiast Diane Dunbrowski, who's caring for her naive nephew (Rory O'Malley) during his "gap year." [Netflix] THE GLORY: In this first-year thriller series from Korea, a traumatized woman (Song Hye-kyo) takes a job as an elementary school teacher in order to seek vengeance on her former bully's child. [Netflix] ALPHA MALES (MACHOS ALFA): Debut comedy series from Spain about four guy friends experiencing a crisis of masculinity. Fernando Gil, Gorka Otxoa, Fele Martínez, and Raúl Tejón co-star. [Netflix] SECRETS OF SUMMER (CIELO GRANDE): The Spanish-language teen drama series, about a Mexican athlete who ventures to an Argentine resort while investigating her family's history, is back for a second season. In the new episodes, the Cielo Grande resort is threatened by a new development plan. [Netflix] WILDCAT: 2022 documentary feature profiling Harry Turner, a British soldier and Afghanistan War veteran who found new direction in his life after visiting the Amazon rainforest. Working with conservationist Samantha Zwicker and raising orphaned animals has helped Turner begin the recovery process from his severe depression and PTSD. [Amazon] ISLAND: Korean action-fantasy series, based on the comic by Yoon In-wan and Yang Kyung-il. The show centers on a group of supernatural heroes teaming up to fight back an invasion of Jeju Island by monsters and goblins; it draws inspiration from the island's traditional legends and folklore. [Amazon] THIS PLACE RULES: Satirical documentary feature from online personality and gonzo journalist Andrew Callaghan, following along as he tours the US and speaks with various activists and protesters -- including "InfoWars" host Alex Jones -- in the months preceding the January 6 attack on the US Capitol. [HBO Max] THE ESTABLISHED HOME: Home renovation and design series from Magnolia Network in which designer Jean Stoffer showcases her favorite projects from around her hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan. [HBO Max / Discovery+] THE PIECE MAKER: Travel series from Magnolia Network in which painter and jigsaw puzzle designer Eric Dowdle learns lessons from different communities and takes in a variety of environments, then incorporates them all into his work. [Discovery+] PROBLEM SPACES: Debut renovation series, also from Magnolia, in which Houston-based designer Fariha Nasir reimagines homes with particularly challenging areas, such as oddly-angled walls and outdated floor plans. [Netflix] THE WAY OF THE HOUSEHUSBAND: The anime comedy series, based on the manga by Kousuke Oono, centers on retired yakuza boss Tatsu, who gives up the criminal world in favor of a quiet, domestic life. Season 2 hits Netflix in the US today. [Netflix] DICK CLARK'S NEW YEAR'S ROCKIN' EVE WITH RYAN SEACREST 2023: The annual holiday special airs Saturday night on ABC and hits Hulu on Sunday. Seacrest co-hosts with Liza Koshy from Times Square, with Ciara joining from Disneyland and Billy Porter in New Orleans. Performers include Halle Bailey, Wiz Khalifa, Aly & AJ, Ben Platt, Betty Who, Dove Cameron, Fitz & the Tantrums, and Shaggy. This is the first entirely computer-animated film from DC Animation. Ed Norton as Miles Bron Rian Johnson spoke to Wired about the connections -- both purposeful and coincidental -- between "Glass Onion" billionaire Miles Bron and real-life entrepreneur Elon Musk. Though Johnson intended to poke fun generally at the tech industry, he describes the timing of the film's release during Musk's controversial takeover of Twitter as a "horrible accident." More: Johnson wrote and directed the film during the height of the COVID pandemic, long before Musk's purchase of Twitter. Several supporters of Musk criticized the film on social media, most notably conservative commentator Ben Shapiro, who tweeted that "Rian Johnson's politics [are] as lazy as his writing." '80s pop icon Cyndi Lauper joined the "Billion Views Club" for the first time with her classic single "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," nearly 40 years after its initial release. Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva recreated the viral dance from Netflix's "Wednesday" during a championship meet this week. The 16-year-old received a silver medal at the Russian Figure Skating Championship for her performance. More: Valieva also sported a black ruffled dress, hair, and make-up inspired by "Wednesday" actor Jenna Ortega's look from the original scene. The dance accompanies The Cramps' cover of the song "Goo Goo Muck" in the series; Valieva's routine is accompanied by snippets from the original "Addams Family" theme and Lady Gaga's song "Bloody Mary."
