EV maker Arrival lays off 50% of staff / General Motors increases revenue by 28.4%

Hey readers – It's been a busy start of the week in the transportation space. Here's what is happening with General Motors' earnings, Volvo Group, EV makers Arrival and XPeng, and the aviation industry:

Nicolas

1. Electric vehicle company Arrival announced the layoff of 50% of its workforce as it seeks to cut its OpEx to extend its runway amid price increases for materials. The company warned it might not have enough cash to operate for the full year.

Q: Do you think Arrival will be able to raise enough capital to survive the year and begin production for its electric van in North Carolina? Share your thoughts.

2. General Motors revealed it generated $43.1B in revenue in the fourth quarter, increasing by 28.4% YoY. The company ended 2022 with $156.7B in revenue, up from $127B in 2021.

Q: GM delivered 39,096 EVs in 2022. The automaker plans to produce 400,000 EVs in North America by H1 2024. Do you think the automaker will be able to reach its EV target? Share your thoughts.

3. The Federal Aviation Administration announced changes after more than 10,000 flights were delayed and 1,300 canceled on Jan. 11 due to a human error involving the Notice To Air Missions system. FAA Administrator Billy Nolen said the agency is adding an hour of delay to synchronize information with the backup database to prevent errors.

Q: The FAA is also planning to replace its legacy system in 2025. Following a separate interruption by Southwest Airlines, do you think airlines will also implement changes to their own systems in 2023? Let us know.

4. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued Volvo Group North America a $130M penalty, including a $65M upfront payment, for failing to recall vehicles in time and report accidents. The truck maker agreed to be audited by a third party and meet with the NHTSA to work on fixing the safety issues.

5. Airports across the U.S. experienced flight cancelations due to inclement weather, including Denver International, Chicago O'Hare, and Dallas-Ft. Worth. Southwest Airlines, which had massive cancelations in December, canceled 332 flights and delayed another 255 as of Monday afternoon, a rate that compares well with other airlines during this storm.

6. The D.C. Council passed a law that removes the fare for all public buses. The city is also earmarking $10M for service improvements.

7. Chinese aviation regulators granted XPeng subsidiary AeroHT a conditional flight permit for its X2 crewed eVTOL. The company expects to begin eVTOL flights in 2024.
