Jonathan Gibbons, Tech Lead of the Java Language Tools team at Oracle, wrote in a post that they are investigating the possibility of Markdown support in Java documentation comments. Markdown is a text formatting syntax that can be easily converted to HTML.  More:  The team is working to address two primary challenges: which version of Markdown to support and how to incorporate it in documentation comments.  Markdown will not replace the existing functionality of inline tags or block tags. It will be available along with standard and user-defined tags.  The team plans to add support for traditional comments and comments that use the ability to use Markdown.  He added that its important to consider the implications for other tools in the ecosystem when designing a new feature.

Google announced updates to Android and Google Play policies for Indian users to abide by the Competition Commission of India's (CCI) directive. The CCI ordered Google to pay a penalty of $161M for anti-competitive behavior.  More:  Google said it would allow OEMs in India to license its individual apps for pre-installation on their devices.  Changes to Android's compatibility requirements allow developers to build non-compatible or forked variants.  From next month, developers in India can offer their users alternative payment methods for purchasing in-app content.   Google also changed the Android installation flow and auto-updating capability for sideloaded apps and app stores.

Experts and developers raised concerns over Java's new subscription model. Last week, Oracle introduced a per-employee pricing model based on total employee counts and not the number of employees using Java.  More:  The new price structure starts at $15 per employee per month for companies with 999 employees and drops to $5.25 for companies with 40,000 to 49,999 employees.  According to industry experts, businesses with limited Java usage would have to license Java per employee, driving the cost up.  Sources told The Register that Oracle would likely pressure legacy users to move to the new model. Currently, legacy users are allowed to renew their existing pricing.  On average, the price change is expected to increase a company's costs by two to four times.

In recent court filings, Microsoft, GitHub, and OpenAI claimed that GitHub's CoPilot made fair use of source code. The companies said allegations made in a class action suit were not specific enough.  More:  In November, two anonymous plaintiffs sued the companies for allegedly training CoPilot with code from GitHub repositories.  The plaintiffs said it violates open-source licenses and monetized their code.  The companies added that the lawsuit did not identify particular copyrighted work that was misused or contracts that were breached.

GitHub announced that it now has over 100 million developers using its platform to build, maintain, and contribute to software projects. In 2019, the company set a goal to achieve the 100-million-developer mark by 2025.  More:  Last year, over 3.5 billion contributions were made to projects on GitHub, and new repositories saw a 20% YoY growth, crossing 85.7 million.   Southeast Asia, Africa, and South America are the fastest-growing regions that are adding developers to GitHub. India has over 10 million developers on GitHub.  Ten years ago, GitHub had 3 million users, and it had 28 million when Microsoft acquired it in 2018. Last year, GitHub revealed it reached annual recurring revenue of $1B.

New Tools and Updates: Microsoft released the beta of TypeScript 5.0 with a new decorators standard, functionality to support ESM projects better in Node and Bundler, new ways to control generic inference, expanded JSDov functionality, simplified configuration, and other improvements.  JetBrains announced the start of GoLand 2023.1 early access program. The program will enable developers to try the latest features and enhancements in GoLand. It is expected to last till mid-March and is free to use for 30 days from the build date.  The Wine team released the stable version of Wine 8.0 with the ability to build all modules in PE format and other updates.  Nut.js 3.0.0 now ships with a logging provider interface, ads support for additional types of Finders, and other updates.
