1 | The news: The Biden administration is set to strengthen export controls, limiting shipments of certain AI chips to China, according to the Wall Street Journal. The move could hinder China's AI capabilities amid concerns about hacking and weapons development. Why it matters: The U.S. Commerce Department is expected to release a proposal in July, making it harder to sell specific chips to China without a license. One focus is on Nvidia's A800 chip, designed for the Chinese market in response to earlier restrictions. The company also made adjustments to its flagship H100 chip to ensure compliance. Under the newly proposed controls, even the A800 chip would be subject to export restrictions without licensing. Response: Nvidia CFO Colette Kress said that strong product demand overall means the rules should not materially affect earnings. However, China represents 20-25% of Nvidia's data center revenue, she said, emphasizing the long-term loss of opportunity if exports to China are banned. | | |
2 | FTX has halted the sale of its stake in AI startup Anthropic, one of its most desirable assets. At the time of its bankruptcy filing in November, FTX held $500M worth of Anthropic stock. The crypto exchange aimed to sell its stake in Anthropic for a significant amount, given the current AI hype and Anthropic's reported valuation of $4.6B according to Semafor. More: - FTX and Alameda, its sister hedge fund, had invested $500M in Anthropic, representing one of FTX's major investments.
- Earlier this month, Semafor reported that FTX was seeking to sell its shares for "hundreds of millions of dollars."
- Perella Weinberg Partners, FTX's advisor, informed potential buyers about the pause this month despite multiple interested buyers.
- Selling the stake could greatly assist FTX's recovery following the recent disclosure of the misappropriation of $8.7B in user funds, of which ~$7B has been recovered.
Zoom out: - Anthropic, an AI startup founded by former OpenAI staffers in 2021, announced a substantial $450M funding round last month.
- The OpenAI competitor, known for its chatbot Claude, has now raised more than $1.5B, making it among the highest-funded AI startups.

3 | People are more likely to believe disinformation generated by GPT-3 than disinformation written by humans, according to a new study published in Science Advances. Participants in the study were 3% less likely to detect false tweets generated by AI than human-written false tweets. More: - In the study, the researchers chose common disinformation topics, like COVID-19 and climate change, and used GPT-3 to create true and false tweets. They also collected true and false tweets from Twitter.
- Participants were then asked to decide if the tweets were generated by AI or from Twitter and if they contained accurate information or disinformation.
- The study concluded that the content generated by GPT-3 was "indistinguishable" from organic content, as people surveyed couldn't tell the difference.
- 11% labeled AI-generated disinformation as truthful, which was 37.5% higher than the human-generated content.
Zoom out: - The study's authors aimed to understand how AI can be weaponized to produce disinformation more quickly and at a larger scale.
- According to Giovanni Spitale, one of the authors, the structured and condensed nature of GPT-3's text ordering could contribute to people being more likely to believe tweets written by AI.
- The study raises concerns about the Ai arms race leading to more powerful language models, which could potentially generate even more convincing content.

4 | Clarkson, a California law firm, has filed a class-action lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the company of infringing upon copyrights and violating privacy by using scraped data from the web to train ChatGPT. The lawsuit, first reported by The Washington Post, was submitted today in federal court in the northern district of California. More: - The lawsuit tests the theory that OpenAI violated the rights of millions of internet users by using their content without permission.
- Clarkson managing partner Ryan Clarkson said the firm seeks to represent "real people whose information was stolen and commercially misappropriated to create this very powerful technology."
- He aims to establish court-mandated regulations for AI algorithm training and fair compensation for individuals whose data is utilized.
- The law firm currently has plaintiffs and is actively seeking additional ones.
