| 1 | | U.S. House leaders are creating a bipartisan task force to explore federal AI regulations. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) announced the task force today. More: - The 24-member panel will produce a report on potential guardrails and policy proposals for AI.
- Specifically, the report will put forward guiding principles, recommendations, and bipartisan policies developed alongside congressional committees.
- The task force will be chaired by Reps. Jay Obernolte (R-Calif.) and Ted Lieu (D-Calif.), each of whom chose a dozen members from their conference for the group.
- Jeffries said bipartisan solutions and "certain guardrails" are needed to shield the public from "bad actors" exploiting the technology.
Zoom out: - In January, U.S. Reps. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) and Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.), from the House Financial Services Committee, formed an AI working group to explore the influence of AI on the financial services and housing industries.

| 2 | | The first human patient to receive a Neuralink brain chip is now able to control a computer mouse with their thoughts, according to founder Elon Musk. Neuralink, the brain-computer-interface company, used a surgical robot to implant the device in January. More: - During an X event on Monday, Musk said, "Progress is good," and the patient appears to have "made a full recovery with no ill effects that we are aware of."
- The recipient, who was not identified, is now able to move a mouse cursor on a computer screen "just by thinking," Musk said.
- Neuralink is also working to add the ability for patients to move a mouse in different directions and hold down a button.
- "We're trying to get as many button presses as possible from thinking," Musk added.
Zoom out: - The brain implant, called Telepathy, will initially help people who have lost functioning of their limbs, Musk has said.
- After overcoming FDA concerns about chip overheating, Neuralink received approval last May and began recruiting for the first human clinical trial last fall.

| 3 | | Alibaba Group Holding and HongShan led a $1B+ funding round into Moonshot AI, valuing the Chinese AI startup at $2.5B, according to LatePost. The round is the largest for any Chinese AI startup since ChatGPT's release in late 2022. More: - Moonshot developed the intelligent chatbot, Kimi Chat, powered by its proprietary Moonshot large language model (LLM).
- The model is capable of processing up to 200,000 Chinese characters within a given context window, meaning it can analyze and understand a vast amount of text at once.
- In November, Kimi Chat opened its doors to everyone, moving beyond the beta testing phase to full public availability.
Zoom out: - CEO and computer scientist Yang Zhilin founded Moonshot AI in April 2023.
- In 2016, he formed Recurrent.ai, which leverages AI technologies to develop sales solutions.
- Yang holds degrees from Beijing's Tsinghua University and Carnegie Mellon University.

| 4 | In a crowdsourced ranking of AI chatbots, Google's Gemini Pro is now second, trailing only OpenAI's GPT-4. Gemini Pro, developed by DeepMind and Google Research, is the mid-size model in Google's Gemini family, powering the chatbot formerly known as Bard. What it is: The Large Model Systems Organization, or LMSys, launched Chatbot Arena last May for Elo-style rankings of LLMs via crowdsourced blind testing. The LMSys research group was established by the University of California, Berkeley, alongside the University of California, San Diego, and Carnegie Mellon University. How it works: Users submit prompts, compare anonymous responses from two models, and vote on the better one. The rankings, based on the Elo rating system popular in chess, are frequently updated and available online. As of December, LMSys had gathered over 130,000 blind pairwise ratings for 45 models. What the numbers show: Various versions of OpenAI's GPT-4 have dominated the rankings since the model's release almost a year ago. But Google's Gemini Pro, previously Bard, and Mistral-Medium from Paris's Mistral AI have climbed the rankings in recent months. In January, Gemini Pro overtook OpenAI's older GPT-4 model (0314), becoming the second highest-scoring chatbot on the LMSYS Leaderboard with a score over 1200, a milestone previously achieved by only one other model. GPT-4 and Gemini Pro continue to outperform all versions of Anthropic's Claude and Alibaba's Qwen model, among others. | | |
| 5 | | Adobe has launched an AI assistant in Acrobat that can summarize and answer questions about PDFs. The assistant is currently in beta for paying users and will become available as a subscription service in the future. More: - The assistant, available in a ChatGPT-like interface, can "read" long PDF documents and generate brief summaries of their contents.
- The feature can also answer questions and suggest its own follow-up questions about the information.
- Under the responses, Adobe's algorithms provide clickable citations for users to verify the bot's accuracy by linking directly to the sourced PDF sections.
- The assistant can also format information for emails, presentations, and reports and will soon be able to design document layouts.
Zoom out: - The assistant is built on the same AI models powering Acrobat Liquid Mode for responsive PDF reading on phones.
