The Pentagon has requested $11.2B for its cybersecurity budget. The budget would be used to harden networks, shield critical infrastructure, and expand forces. More: This request is $800M more than it got in FY2022 and $1.4B more than in FY2021. The Navy would receive $1B, a $200M increase over the FY2022. The Defense Department plans to add three teams to the Cyber Command's Mission Force, which has thousands of members at the moment. The budget asks for the Army and Air Force were not disclosed. Zoom Out: The budget increase comes as a result of the predicted importance that cybersecurity will have in the future and also due to the present situation in Ukraine.  White House documents have described investment in cybersecurity as a priority. The FBI, NSA, and CISA have accused Russian-backed hackers of targeting U.S. defense contractors.

Russian antivirus/cybersecurity products company Kaspersky was added to a U.S. national security blacklist by the FCC. The agency added it to the Covered List, a list of services and products the government wants to keep an eye on. More: The decision was based on the Secure and Trusted Communications Networks Act of 2019. All affiliates, subsidiaries, and linked companies are considered a potential threat. Kaspersky has been involved with U.S. tech companies such as Microsoft, Intel, and IBM. The company expressed its dissatisfaction with the decision.

The Australian Government has pledged a $10B budget for the Australian Signals Directorate, its national intelligence agency. The money will be spread out over 10 years. More: Australia’s electronic spy agency plans to double in size and triple its cyber offensive capabilities due to the budget increase. The ASD is expected to create over 1,900 jobs over a decade.  This represents the largest cybersecurity budget in Australian history. $4.2B will be spent during the first four years of the budget plan.

The European Court of Auditors said that European Union agencies must increase their cybersecurity defensive capabilities. ECA emphasized the risk the EU faces due to its interconnectivity. More: The ECA said the level of cybersecurity preparedness at EU agencies is not the same across all agencies and therefore poses a security threat. Because EU agencies are interconnected, one weak agency may put all the other ones at a security risk. ECA singled out the lack of funds, the lack of good cybersecurity practices, and the inconsistent approach toward cybersecurity as risks. The auditing agency called on the EU Agency for Cybersecurity to help EU agencies with their security posture.

The U.S. Cyber Security & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) issued a notice regarding the e-Alert MRI system from Philips. The Dutch conglomerate has released a statement with instructions on how hospital workers should tackle the issue. More: The vulnerability could allow an unauthorized actor to remotely shut down the system. Philips is planning to release an update that fixes the vulnerability before July 2022. As a short-term fix, Phillips has instructed all users to adhere to the instructions and only allow authorized personnel to use the system. CISA has instructed to use secure methods such as virtual private networks when remote access is needed, recognizing that VPNs may have vulnerabilities.
