A new AI model in OpenAI's GPT-3 family can produce longer-form content, including poetry and rhyming songs, at a level not previously seen in the models. The "text-davinci-003" language model does the same tasks but requires fewer instructions than its predecessors, according to OpenAI. More: - The model is particularly suited for tasks that require in-depth knowledge of a particular subject, such as creative content.
- It shows a more adept ability to deduce solutions and understand the intent behind the text.
- Davinci is, however, slower and more expensive per API call than other GPT-3 models.
- Users with an OpenAI account can experiment with the GPT-3 models via the AI lab's Playground webpage, where they can type instructions to generate text results for a fee.

San Francisco-based Deepgram announced it has raised $47M in equity financing led by Madrona, with participation from new investor Alkeon. The AI speech recognition specialist sells a deep learning-based service that transcribes spoken audio into text. More: - The company says its voice-recognition engine can process audio from meetings, interviews, speeches, and more in more than 30 languages.
- It develops customized voice-recognition solutions, including data-based models that understand specific jargon. For example, its custom-built model for NASA could transcribe communications between the ISS and Mission Control.
- It was launched in 2015 by Chief Executive Scott Stephenson, a particle physicist who is now a deep learning entrepreneur.
Funding: - The latest equity funding completes Deepgram's $72M Series B round, the largest of that stage in the automatic speech recognition category.
- The funding will go toward research and engineering to address challenges like intent recognition, topic and emotion detection, and redaction, Stephenson said.

Researchers claim a new AI model can predict a patient's risk of death from a stroke or heart attack within the next 10 years. The deep learning model relies on a single chest X-ray to screen patients, although it still needs validation from a randomized controlled trial. More: - The model was trained to identify patterns linked to atherosclerosis, or thickening or hardening of the arteries.
- The researchers trained the AI model using nearly 148,000 chest X-rays from more than 40,000 participants in the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial.
- The algorithm was then tested on data from more than 11,000 patients. After more than 10 years, they found a "significant link" between the AI's risk score and the likelihood of one of the patients undergoing a major cardiac event.
- If validated, the model could serve as a population-based opportunistic screening device by using existing chest X-rays to identify patients who could benefit from statin medication.
- The team was led by lead author Dr. Jakob Weiss, a radiologist affiliated with the Cardiovascular Imaging Research Center at Massachusetts General Hospital and the AI in Medicine program at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

Goldman Sachs Asset Management and G2 Venture Partners led a $117M Series F round in Locus Robotics, valuing the warehouse robotics startup at nearly $2B. Locus's main "co-bot" offering can transport items from warehouse shelves to packing stations and conveyor belts. More: - The Massachusetts-based firm offers autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) that can integrate into existing warehouses via a "robots-as-a-service" business model.
- It offers three AMRs, which are the 5-foot-tall Origin robot, the heavy-duty Max, compact Vector model.
- CEO Rick Faulk implied that the company has the numbers to potentially have an IPO in the next 12 to 24 months.
- In August, logistics provider GeoDis ordered 1,000 autonomous mobile robots from Locus for its warehouse locations worldwide.

At today's re:Invent conference, Amazon introduced an Alexa tool that utilizes AI to generate animated bedtime stories for children. The "Create with Alexa" tool relies on generative and conversational AI models to create the stories from user prompts. More: - The tool, now available in the U.S. in English only, is supported on Amazon's Echo Show smart speakers that have touchscreen displays.
- Users prompt Alexa to "make a story" and then answer questions regarding the story's themes, hero, and adjectives.
- The AI technology then creates a 5- to 10-line story based on the prompts, including animations, sound effects, and music. The story differs each time, even if the same prompts are chosen.
- The team used only curated data to train the tool's AI models to ensure that they're kid-friendly, according to Amazon's Alexa AI head of product, Eshan Bhatnagar.
