1 | Google is bringing its Duet AI assistant to all paying users of Workspace apps, including Gmail, Drive, Slides, Docs, and others. After extensive testing involving over 1 million users, Duet AI for Google Workspace is now generally available. More: - Google has rebranded its generative AI tools across its Workspace apps as "Duet AI."
- Examples of its features include:
- A note-taking tool that generates summaries and action items in Google Meet.
- An AI tool in Gmail that can draft whole emails.
- Automatic table generation in Google Sheets.
- Ability to generate images and presentations in Google Slides
Pricing: - Google plans to charge businesses $30 a month per user to access its new AI tools across Gmail, Drive, Slides, Docs, and more.
- The cost is the same as Microsoft's price for its AI system Copilot, which offers similar features across Office apps.
- Google said it will first allow free trials of the AI service before charging companies.
- The $30 fee is in addition to what companies pay for subscriptions to Google Workspace, the company's suite of cloud-based productivity apps formerly known as G Suite.
- Pricing for consumers and smaller businesses will be shared in the coming months.
More: - Google Workspace claims 10 million paying organizations, up from 9 million in March and 6 million in 2020.
- The biggest competitor to Google Workspace is Microsoft Office 365, which claimed 345 million paid commercial users in 2022.

2 | Google DeepMind has developed SynthID, a tool to watermark AI-generated images such as deepfakes. Now in the beta phase, the technology adds a digital watermark inside image pixels, visible for ID purposes but imperceptible to the human eye. More: - After a White House meeting in July, Google and six other AI companies committed to watermarking audio and visual content to indicate that it is AI-generated.
- Google is the first to offer SynthID, which provides three confidence levels for AI image detection, "Digital watermark detected," "Digital watermark not detected," and "Digital watermark possibly detected."
- According to Google, SynthID can't be removed by simple editing or compression and should not compromise image quality.
- SynthID will initially launch to a select group of business customers of Vertex AI, Google's cloud-based machine learning platform.
- It's only available through Imagen, Google Cloud's own text-to-image model.

3 | Tech CEOs like Meta's Mark Zuckerberg and OpenAI's Sam Altman are set to attend Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer's AI forum next month. Despite public distrust in government AI regulation, Schumer is leading efforts to establish a "new AI policy foundation" for the U.S. Details: Schumer is organizing the closed AI-focused meeting on Sept. 13. So far, the guest list includes notable figures such as Zuckerberg, Altman, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, X owner Elon Musk, Microsoft Co-Founder Bill Gates, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt. The first of nine "AI Insight Forums," the event will tackle AI regulations, worker safeguards, national security, and more. Workers, advocacy, civil rights, and creative groups will also attend, and the bipartisan gathering will be press-free. Why it matters: Given the lack of robust AI regulation in the U.S., Schumer positions his framework as pivotal for the country's global leadership as AI becomes more ingrained in daily living. According to a KPMG Australia and University of Queensland survey, public trust in government institutions for AI regulation is low, highlighting that a variety of stakeholders may be needed to help build the basis for trustworthy AI rules. "We need the best of the best sitting at the table: the top AI developers, executives, scientists, advocates, community leaders, workers, national security experts - all together in one room, doing years of work in a matter of months," Schumer said. Question: Do you prefer governments taking the lead in AI regulation, or do you lean toward tech companies self-regulating? Join the discussion here. | | |
