The Kasai Occidental Military Court in Congo sentenced 50 people to death in connection with the murder of U.N. investigators in the Kasai region in 2017. The investigators – Michael Sharp and Zaida Catalan – were working on behalf of the U.N. Security Council and were on a field visit to investigate the violence in Kasai. More: - U.S. citizen Michael Sharp was a panel coordinator and armed groups expert, while Swedish citizen Zaida Catalan was a humanitarian expert.
- The investigators were accompanied by members of Kamwina Nsapu militia, whose customary chief Jean-Pierre Mponde was executed in 2016 by Congolese army troops.
- The Congolese government obtained a video showing the murders taking place and alleging Kamwina Nsapu militia’s involvement in the killings.
- The military court sentenced Col. Jean de Dieu Mambweni to 10 years in prison for failing to assist a person in danger and acquitted journalist Trudon Raphaël Kapuku and police officer Honoré Tshimbamba.
- As Congo has had a moratorium on the death penalty since 2003, it will result in a life sentence.
- Despite the military court investigation and the subsequent sentencing, there are still questions surrounding the murders and the role of senior officials, per Human Rights Watch’s senior researcher Thomas Fessy.
- Ann Linde, Sweden’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, has called for the investigations to continue and help uncover the truth behind the murders.
