1 What happened: Netflix has listed an AI job with a $900k salary, causing a strong response from actors as the Hollywood strike continues. What the numbers say: In 2022, 1.8 million jobs were lost due to AI globally. AI, however, helped created 2.3 million jobs, offering a blueprint of what the future could be like for the movie industry. The bigger picture: The American film industry has been going through a crisis 14th of July 2023 when The Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA went on strike simultaneously, marking only the second time in history that they've done so. According to actors, algorithms are dictating the number of seasons and the number of episodes per season. Currently, the algorithm recommends that each show has four seasons and six to eight episodes per season. Actors claim that they cannot earn a good living based on this number of episodes and have demanded that using AI to create source material should be banned.

2 Cruise is expanding its robotaxi program to Nashville, Tennessee. After operating for several years in San Francisco, over the past year, the company has started offering its services in five other cities ― Austin, Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, and Miami. More: Founded in 2013, Cruise is a subsidiary of General Motors specializing in self-driving technology. The company introduced its Level 4-5 autonomous vehicles, which have self-driving capabilities requiring little human intervention, in San Francisco in 2020. Cruise also started a testing program with Honda in Japan the following year. The company has a three-step roll-out strategy: first offers test cars with a human safety operator, then introduces the ride-hailing service without an operator for company employees and then makes the service available to the general public. The company may soon expand to Atlanta, as it has posted jobs for security area managers in the city.

3 Scientists have been able to identify an extinct antibiotic using Artificial Intelligence. The algorithm used data from both modern humans and Neanderthals. More: Using this method, scientists aim to bring back molecules from the past in order to solve issues that are currently present. By doing so, they expect to help create a new generation of antibiotic treatments, especially considering the fact that antibiotic resistance is on the rise. The researchers trained an AI algorithm to recognize sites on human proteins where they are known to be cut into peptides. In order to find these new peptides, the team scanned publicly available protein sequences using AI. The researchers tested dozens of peptides to see whether they could kill bacteria in laboratory dishes. They then selected six potent peptides and gave them to mice infected with a common bacteria. According to the scientists, the AI managed to create a roadmap that was good enough to stop the bacteria.

4 Google has announced its new RT-2 language model that helps turn words and vision into actions for robots. The company called it a first-of-its-kind vision language. More: The new model was trained on web and robotics data, including large language models on Google's chatbot, Bard. According to the company, RT-2 can transfer a large amount of data and enable robots to perform actions they were previously not trained to do. Previously, if a robot were told to take out the trash, it would have to identify the specific objects that needed to be thrown and know the context of what items in the kitchen are trash and what aren't. Google says its RT-2 model can help robots contextualize and solve this problem. Google claims that RT-2 understands directions in languages other than English.

5 Crowdstrike is set to acquire cybersecurity company Bionic AI for up to $300M, according to a report from TechCrunch. Bionic AI is based in Israel and California. More: Founded by former Israeli army intelligence unit members, the company specializes in providing advanced cloud security services. Bionic AI's clients include Chipotle, Freddie Mac, and Transamerica. Microsoft recently considered acquiring Bionic AI, an unnamed source told TechCrunch. Since its inception in 2019, Bionic AI has raised over $82M. Crowdstrike specializes in cybersecurity and is based in Austin, Texas.

6 A man in the U.S. who was paralyzed in an accident has regained control over his hands through a brain implant procedure involving AI. More: Keith Thomas was paralyzed while swimming in a pool at 42 years old. Five small chips were implanted into Thomas' brain. These chips can send and interpret signals between his brain, damaged spinal cord, and hands. The technology aims to activate damaged circuits in the spinal cord and then seek to strengthen those connections. There is no information on whether this technology will be scaled, but health officials were optimistic regarding this case and further developments in this field.
