Good morning and thanks for opening today's Inside Streaming daily brief! More and more evidence keeps piling up that releasing films simultaneously to movie theaters and streaming platforms not only doesn't diminish box office returns but actually provides a bit of a marketing and visibility boost. Universal's "Five Nights at Freddy's" -- which hit theaters and the Peacock streaming platform on the same day -- had the biggest opening weekend in Blumhouse history. With just a $20 million budget, it will surely rank among the year's most profitable films. Now, sure, Peacock doesn't have the same subscriber base as, say, Netflix. If the grandaddy of all streamers had "Five Nights at Freddy's" on its front page, that probably would've kept some additional folks on their couches, particularly among older viewers who don't have as much brand loyalty to the franchise as their tween counterparts. Still, millions of Americans do, in fact, have Peacock. It's fairly undeniable now that -- if a new release has enough online virality and built-in interest from fans -- it will do well financially in theaters, whether or not you can also stream it at home. There's no real need for the old-fashioned approach to platform exclusivity. Lon p/lon-harris | |
1 | Universal and Blumhouse's feature adaptation of the "Five Nights at Freddy's" video game franchise was a mosnter hit at movie theaters over the weekend, despite simultaneously releasing on the Peacock platform. The film debuted with $80 million in revenue at the US box office, and $130 million globally, on just a $20 million production budget. More: - "Freddy's" had the biggest opening in Blumhouse's history, surpassing the $76.22 million haul for the 2018 "Halloween" reboot.
- "Freddy's" box office take has already surpassed the entire global haul for 2022's "Halloween Ends," and will soon top 2021's "Halloween Kills," which brought in $133 million worldwide.
- Josh Hutcherson stars as a security guard who's hired for the overnight shift at a defunct pizza restaurant, where the Chuck E. Cheese-inspired animatronic animal band comes to life and hunts humans.
- As Peacock has fewer subscribers than many of its streaming rivals, it's believed that the simultaneous release didn't hurt its box office performance as much as a Netflix, Disney+, or Max debut might have.

2 | "Sesame Street" will undergo some major creative format changes ahead of its upcoming 56th season. The new episodes will debut in 2025, after the close of the show's five-year deal with Warner Bros. Discovery. More: - Most significantly, the show will drop its "magazine"-style format in favor of longer, narrative-driven live-action segments; these will be interrupted by a new recurring animated feature, called "Tales from 123."
- These will be the most significant updates to "Sesame Street" since 2016, when the educational series moved from 60-minute episodes to a half-hour format.
- No decision has yet been announced about the show's fate following Season 55 and its current WBD deal; it could remain on Max moving forward, or jump to a new platform or network.
- Currently, new episodes of "Sesame Street" debut exclusively on the Max service, and air on PBS following a nine-month delay.

4 | An investigation by the UK's Sunday Times found several inaccuracies in Netflix's four-part David Beckham documentary profile. In general, the report claims that the docuseries "Beckham" frequently manipulates the narratives around key events in the football star's favor. More: - Most of the examples from the Sunday Times report center on the series' recollections of notable football matches.
- For example, in a segment focusing on the 2001 World Cup qualifier, the series makes it look as though Beckham is fouled moments before scoaring a dramatic goal; in fact, it was his teammate Teddy Sherigham who was fouled.
- Another segment, dealing with tabloid reports of an extra-martial affair between Beckham and his personal assistant, Rebecca Loos, swaps text on a real Daily Mirror front page, highlighting Beckham's denial of the report.
- The "Beckham" docuseries is already a significant hit in the UK, where it has been viewed by around 3.4 million Netflix subscribers.

7 | Actor Matthew Perry -- who starred on all 10 seasons of "Friends" as Chandler Bing -- died on Saturday at the age of 54. The Max streaming platform, the current home for the full run of "Friends," added a tribute card to the start of each season of the beloved '90s comedy series, honoring the actor's memory. - He was remembered fondly in statements from "Friends" co-creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane, and executive producer Kevin Bright.
