3 | The Writers Guild of America (WGA) union has overwhelmingly approved a new three-year labor contract with Hollywood studios, addressing compensation and AI safeguards. The agreement sets new guidelines for AI usage in scriptwriting for films and TV, which generally has low support among the American public, according to SurveyMonkey research. Details: Under the terms of the WGA contract, writers can use AI in their work as long as they have studio consent. AI cannot write or rewrite literary material, and AI-created material also cannot be used to "undermine a writer's credit or separated rights." A provision gives the WGA the authority to challenge the use of writers' works in training AI software. Zoom out: In a broader context, 99% of WGA members voted in favor of the agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). The contract extends until May 2026 and includes increased initial and residual pay for high-budget streaming projects. Minimum pay for most writers will rise by 5% initially, followed by 4% in May 2024 and 3.5% in May 2025. Q: Do you believe that the inclusion of AI safeguards in the WGA's contract is a positive step for the entertainment industry? Share your thoughts and join the conversation here. | | |
